By the time you get here in mid-May it will be dark by 1800, not really the time to be sightseeing or being very active with any beach/river activities. Full days are different. Apart from the regular river cruises on the Swan and day trips to Rottnest Island, etc, May is a good time for some of the following - May is the start of the whale watching season as the humpbacks begin their migration north. Several companies offer cruises. Penguin Island is still open to visitors in May. Rivergods do a terrific sea kayaking day tour to the island that also includes seal island. Google Rivergods sea kayaking and you'll find all the details. The Pinnacles tours are very popular. They usually include some beach activity and sand boarding Viator has lots of tours on offer www.viator.com/tours/perth

You could take a day trip to Mandurah, the metro train gets you to Mandurah in less than an hour. Mandurah is a small city built around the estuary and the 100square km Peel Inlet. Has a magnificent promenade, Ferry Cruises, dolphin cruises, canal cruises. It also has a beautiful new harbour with markets , restaurants shops etc. An all day train pass is around7. Photos on my Mandurah page, also has nice beaches. Boat hire if you wish. Day trip to Rottnest Island which is located 18km off the coast. Also daily river cruises on Swan river, to Fremantle, or uo river to the Swan Valley wineries. Take the metro train from city to Cottesloe station, then a 10 minute walk to Cottesloe beach ( surf) but May will be cold for locals. Cottesloe pub is a great place for lunch.
