Hi, We are travelling down from Toronto in August. Can anyone recommend the best border crossing and also some nice small towns/laid back places to stay in Pennsylvania. We have heard Bloomsberg is nice - also we like the forest and walking etc. Many thanks, Peter
This really depends on where you start and end -- where in Toronto are you starting? Personally, I love the natural beauty of upstate New York, but if you are closer to Niagara, then it doesn't make much sense to use the more northern border. Same with PA - where do you plan to end? PA is a large state with lots to do and see, but most of the action is on either end of the state (Pittsburgh or Philly). For forest and walking, I recommend central PA (again, depends on where you plan to end your journey). Bloomsburg is a nice town, as are many of the towns in the central PA region (Hubby is from that area and we have lots of family in those parts and have visited many, many times). For walking and forest in central PA, you might want to hike some of the Appalachian Trail - typically well marked trails that will be a busier in August because of hiking season. The down side is that the trail in one way and not a loop so you would have to return to your start by coming back on the same trail. Here is the website for PA parks. There are lots of little parks scattered throughout the state and lots of state game lands that are beautiful. dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks/... August in PA can be very, very hot, so when you go walking, be prepared for the heat (and that section of the US has been having really high temps already this season, so if it continues, it will be extremely hot and humid).
