Going to Tikal for sunrise

by sakuyaini Online Now Aug 22, 2009 at 4:57 PM

Hi,

We are staying in Flores and would like to be in Tikal by sunrise. Is it possible to do this ? or is it only if we stay right outside of the Park ? I've read that the park opens at 6am - will we have enough time to climb, eg, Temple 4 and be on top by sunrise ?

I asked my hotel for the earliest transpo to Tikal and they told me, 7am. So now I am wondering if there are plenty of transportation options from Flores to get to Tikal for sunrise ? We prefer going by ourselves, but if it is better to go on a tour, we can do it as well and will just make sure we can get some time on our own to explore the place.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Maria

I stayed in El Remate myself (halfway between Flores and Tikal), but I'll try to help.
    - It takes a little longer than one hour to go from Flores to Tikal.
    - You can be on a minibus, but not part of a tour if you wish.
    - Minibuses drop you with eight hours at the site. That is enough time to see everything.
    - You don't need to plan ahead. There are many tour agencies in Flores.
    - It's often cloudy (as you can see on my Tikal page), but even with no real sunrise, it's wonderful.
    - I left El Remate at 5:30am, on a shuttle that had left Flores at 5:00.
    - Buy the overpriced "cartoon" map at the entrance. It'll help you get situated.
    - Take water, sunscreen and bug spray.
    - Temple V is crazy! Don't look down.

    Have a wonderful time.
