From Salt Lake Airport to Park CityHI

by giampiero6 Online Now Mar 22, 2010 at 2:07 PM

Hello Again,

Dear Gurus...what do you think? If I'm coming into Salt Lake, should I renta car and drive to Park City or should I just jump a shuttle. I hear we probably won't need a car....but what if I plan on skiing in several diff. places?

Thanks a million,

G

    Def. rent a car G.
Ed and I have done that trip a million times (just about).
You'll appreciate the freedom a car gives you.
Thrifty and Hertz were the best option last time I was there in October.

Mention VT and see if you can get a discount if not, AAA.

Thanks a lot Homer..that's what I figured especially as I'm getting in a bit late. The thought of all public transit seems nice, but doesn't seem realistic in this case.

    Any preferred ski destination?

I'm not a skier but have many friends in that area.
I've been visiting SLC and Jackson Hole for years.
Jackson Hole, WY of course is top destination and only 3 1/2 hours from SLC.
Best option (if you're so inclined) is to fly into SLC and drive via Idaho not Bear Lake into StarValley/Jackson.

Grand Targhee is also nice on other side of Tetons.
I can put feelers out with you for some prime spots.
Give me a day or so.

Hey thanks a lot! Don't kill yourself...I'm sure we'll explore a bit with brother and nephews but just curious to hear other skiers' opinions.

    G. Take the rental car. Only about a 30 minute drive to Park City via a great freeway system, but be careful, SLC drivers are worse than LA drivers. It reminds me of being in a Nascar race. Too close and cut off quickly. Park City Mountion Resort is close in. Deer Valley Resort and The Canyous Resort are close by with the car. A great Italian restaurant and a nightclub as well, is Cisero's Ristorante on Main Street in Park City. The Lumaconi dish and the grilled artichoke were delicious. A hang out at night. Use Swede Alley behind Cisero's for parking as Main Street has limited parking. Have Fun.

What kind of skiing do you do? My daughter snowboards and has decided after skiing some of the bigger places in Montana that Red Lodge beats them.

I'm a fairly aggressive advanced-ish skier who doesn't do the bumps :) Speed and cruising...

Well, I'm of the opinion that if you don't plan do do anything other than head to Park City and Ski for a couple days a shuttle would work just fine. There are too many cars in Park City as it is and parking can sometimes be an issue. From anywhere in Park City the free bus will take you to restaurants, ski resorts and hotels. parkcity.org/index.aspx?page...

If you have three days try all three resorts up there.. Deer Valley is ski only, Park City has the terrain park for the boarders, Canyons has tons of acres and they should all be great next week with the snow we've had yesterday. Unless of course you came this week....

Thanks! One more question for the gurus. Looks like my brother will be getting a car and will be arriving before I am. I'm going to get from airport to Park City on my own.

Can you guys please advise me about best options for that?

Should I take a cab? Is there a shuttle service that goes there? I get in around 9:30 so wondering if it's too late.

    Any thoughts and best options?

Did you check with your hotel to see if they offer any kind of transportation? Often times if they do not have free shuttles, they have a contract with a shuttle service that reduces the cost of transportation to the hotel.

All resort Express seems to be the one most people refer to.

I am still playing with the idea of a VT meet in Red Lodge next winter. Would you be willing to come if I planned that?

Renting a car always makes things better. I would definitely go that route.

Hey man. I can tell you for sure that a car is worth it. You can experience a lot more of the area. But, on the other hand, PC is lucky enough to be a town with FREE public transportation. Thats right, any bus you see, you can hop on and take. buses normally run from just about 7am to 10pm in the winter. A shuttle will cost you about40 each way through all resort express, which is pretty cheap. All the transportation companies out here have to pay stupid high insurance rates due to the drive through parley's canyon up to PC.

Also, parking in PC is only difficult during Sundance, any other time of the year their is plenty of it. China Bridge parking garage is awsome, due to it being free and having a built in liquor store.

    Utah POW does not disapoint.
