Saturday Night???

by MartyAP Online Now Aug 5, 2012 at 3:14 AM

Thanks for helping me on the baseball hat question. I'm going to consider some other options. Looking for something to do on Saturday night. Based on reviews I have read here are a few options. One consideration is a venue that is easy to get to and from our hotel in Montparnasse which is located near either the #4 or #12. 1. How To Become a Parisian in One Hour......(metro Grands Boulevards) very good reviews; in English; funny comedy.....but very short in duration of a little over an hour. 2. Le Caveau de la Huchette.....jazz club in the Latin Quarter (metro is Saint Michel on the 4 line) 3. La Nouvelle Eve......smaller cabaret venue.....gets good reviews.....many prefer over Moulin Rouge.......not sure about area at night (metro stations are either Blanche or Pigalie) I recently read a bunch of comments entitled "What I Would Have Liked To Know Before My Paris Trip." The overall theme was not to over think your trip but simply go and enjoy Paris. Your valuable help on VT is really appreciated. I'm not over thinking our trip but for me learning about all these new things is part of the joy of traveling.........Merci Beaucoup.

Hi Hard to recommend anything, not knowing your taste, but these options seem to be more in the category of club/cabaret entertainment? Is that what you're looking for? You have already posted a query on the ballet, so Çulture (with a capital C) obviously doesn't intimidate you. If this is the case, why not look at attending a classical concert in a historical building? When I was last in Paris, I went to a performance of Baroque music in St Chapelle which was just wonderful. The music was accessible (some would venture 'middlebrow') with a stringe quartet playing Vivaldi's Four Seasons and other pieces by Pachabel and Albinoni, and as a concert it was very enjoyable. However, the star of the show was the venue, which is a little jewel box of Gothic perfection, and marvelling a the vibrant colours of the gorgeous stained glass as the sun set outside to a soundtrack of wonderful music was an utterly brilliant experience. It was somewhere that I'd wanted to visit anyway, so the way I viewed it, by attending the concert, I'd got '2 for the price of 1'. Many churches in Paris host occasional concerts, so if this is of interest to you, then just look out for posters once you get there. Many are fairly early in the evening, so you could always combine them with a club later on if you still had the energy. And lastly, I would agree that there are places in the world where you have to plan your visit with military precision, and places where it's far more rewarding to just go with the flow. Paris falls emphatically into the latter category, so you'd be wise not to overplan: if you don't get to the end of your 'Must See' list because you've been waylaid and sidetracked by wonderful things that you've unexpectedly stumbled across en route, then consider your trip a success and 'bank' the unseen items for your next trip! Regards Cathy

Only went to the Caveau once a long time ago, but it was a very good night. A positive is you can walk there from your hotel. Another two clubs to consider are on rue Galande, just next to St Julien church in St Michel. The first is the Trois Mailletz at no. 56 a piano-bar/cabaret. http://www.lestroismailletz.fr/ The other is at no 58, the "Caveau des Oubliettes". This is much more eclectic, different music on different nights. http://caveaudesoubliettes.fr/ Both are a stones throw from la Huchette.

well after all is done you will be able to write a book on Paris ::) AGain i dont know your interests, so answers will be very general 1) Great comedian, I know him !!!!!!!!!! Olivier Giraud, actually got to know him by his girlfriend Claude who is a server at my favorite hangout La Gare on the 16th; the entire expat community in Paris has gone to see him ,I help spread the word. here is the place for theaters that I follow ,but in French au-theatre.com/spectacles/ol... 2) Le Caveau de la Huchette, here is ok, but my favorite jazz club and many Americans play there is the Le Petit Journal by 13 Rue du Commandant René Mouchotte near gare Montparnasse, site in French petitjournalmontparnasse.com... 3) La Nouvelle Eve, indeed good reviews, dont know, but Paris has plenty, I had given you before the Lapin-Agile.Could be a find... for you; And yes I agree about that statement, i have folks visiting Paris wanting to do so much on the excitement of visiting Paris, and then missing on a lot. Once biten by the Paris virus ,you will be back for more, because Paris is a movable feast... Enjoy the city of Paris. Je vous en prie.

We are all members of VT for our own personal reasons. Some people write tips, some people respond to forum queries, some post forum queries and relatively few do all three. Without people who post queries category, there would be no questions for people in the second category to respond to, so I think that we should just be grateful to them for providing us with some challenging mental recreation - and if they give us a thumbs up rating for the helpfulness of our responses, then so much the better! Marty (since I think that you're 'Marty the guy' rather than 'Mary the girl' as implied above), if you've been a member since 2003 and only visit occasionally, I'm just hugely impressed that you can remember your password!

OK....it is Marty, not Mary. As for my passwords.....I write them all down......although many are the same or similar it is necessary. I was an assistant principal (AP) and then principal in the NYC school system....hence MartyAP. I began using VT in 2003-04 for a land trip to Spain....followed by trips to Italy, Turkey, Greece and a few Mediterranean cruises. We have been to the French Riviera but never to Paris. My parents are alive and well (Dad is 92, mom is 87) but for the last two years we have been traveling closer to home, especially in the colder months.....Florida, Caribbean.....boring!!!! Mom and Dad are independent but it is necessary to help out as much as possible so we have been staying closer to home. Dad was actually with the 7th Armored Division during WWII and his unit liberated several concentration camps as well as many towns in France. They have been to Paris as guests many times so they are indeed very pleased we are taking this trip. I just thoroughly enjoy the "planning" stages and VT has always been a fantastic source of the best info (including the baseball hat dilemma!)

very well explained MartyAP and since you have ancestors with the 7th armored division that liberated France, you are excuse for life... I had a bar near my house here, and they have a big pole with the US flag outside. When I first check out the bar (routine gesture ::)) , I waited for the waitress to be close ,and ask her why the US flag outside her business (husband and wife team), and she immediately told me; because they liberated us, and I like rock and roll and Harley Davidson motocycles !!! Well it has become my watering hole ever since in my area. Cheers

On our Saturday night in Paris this past April (after spending most of the afternoon with Gwened and 2 other virtual now real VT friends) my wife and I started out at the Arc de Triomphe 6:30 eternal flame ceremony, walked down some side streets away from the main tourist areas and then strolled along the Champs de Elysse for several hours people watching and buying some chocolate.

The two jazz places on Gallande are much smaller and intimate, I remember having to sit on the stairs as the places pack up easily. But no cover from what I remember. Huchette is a larger club and there were larger combos playing as well as a cover of around 10+ euro. As mentioned, there are music concerts almost every night at any given church. They are usually free but a contribution is expected when you enter. Anything from a solo organ concert to Mozarts Requiem. As you wander through Paris the placards are posted on the church. Karl

My vote for Le Caveau de la Huchette. Somehow to me, Paris and jazz go together and it is incredibly convenient for you. Have fun.
