I am going to be in Paris for only one night and in the past I have always used the metro system without any problems. However this visit I have plans for a rather late night out. I see the metro ceases operation somewhere near midnight and I am a bit confused about the night buses. I was wondering how easy is it to catch a taxi in the hours after midnight? Its a short ride from where I am gonna be to where I am staying but I dont know the streets so well and I am sure beer will be playing a role as well.
In that situation a lot of us use the Vélib' bikes, which are available 24/7. You would have to get a one-day ticket, though. Can now be booked online for 1.70 Euros, or bought at the machine. Usually there are some nice people around to help you check out a bike if you are doing it for the first time.

I see from your photo that you are a cyclist, so Vélib’ might really be an option. The machine might not accept your American credit card, however, so it would be best to book a one-day ticket online. Then you would have a number that you could just type into the machine to get your bike. (Maybe try it first by daylight just to see how it works.)

Let us know roughly what streets you'll be on and Don will be able to give a Velib station or I can tell you the prospect of catching a taxi.

very good night buses, nice tour on your own and cheap, here is the link in English noctilien.fr/Noctilien/Switc... and yes metro ceases by 1h15-30 (am)depends on station. You will be better off to go to designated paris stands all over paris if I know hwere you staying can tell you exactly. Get them on the run is a bit fuzzy, it depends on the driver at those hours, sometimes the police has to stop them to get folks out of discotheques cheers

Just re-read your thing about the beer. Parisian taxi-drivers can refuse (its in the regulations)to pick up someone that they estimate could be drunk or disorderly.

Beer Mark - Hmmm? do beer and bicycles mix?...methinks not! (Don you are too hardcore - ;-) ) A couple of years ago I stumbled out of one jazz bars near Blvd. St. Michel fairly late and I was surprised at the amount of activity and number of taxis still buzzing around. I ended up walking the 25 minutes to my place near Opera. There did seem to be a taxi queue at the major late night attractions such as Moulin Rouge. PS - Paul - your VT photo looks suspiciously like a political statement. ;-)

Haha Karl, As I don't have the right to vote here in France that's the only way I can express myself!!! No, truth is, I took the photo near rue St Jacques, a bit of street-art that says a lot by a fella called "Jef Aerosol".
