Pleease help me! I'm leaving for Paris tomorrow, May 10th and I just realized that I may not be allowed to bring home made glutenfree bread into France! I'm allergic to gluten and have tried to search the web for info but all I could find was Canadian and American pages. I live in Sweden and I'm not sure if other rules apply to European countries. Can anyone help me? Thanks in advance! Anna
Why not purchase your bread when you get there? Gluten-free diets are not unknown in Europe, and with a little looking around the net, you can find places to buy your bread. Just to throw out a couple of examples, a search brought up this page: adventuresomekitchen.wordpre... I looked up Naturalia (praised in the article) and here is a map/listing of their locations in Paris: http://tinyurl.com/7rcbes3 This was just once search - taking a few minutes will very likely turn up more options. Good luck!

You're very welcome - now you can relax! And if Gwened says it's good, it must be - he's a local. :)

Wow, thanks! We will be staying at Avalon Hotel, 133 boulevard de Magenta, just by Gare Du Nord. Our time of arrival will be at about 6 or 7 pm, are there any shops open at that time?

According to the map there is a Naturalia on 75 Boulevard de Magenta so not far at all from you. I can't find hours but being it's a market, I'm guessing it might still be open into the evening. Gwened? Your thoughts?

Hmmm - this says 73 Boulevard Magenta instead of 75 but no matter - the difference is small. It looks like this: cityvox.fr/bons-produits_par...

Ok, if this info is current (won't swear to that) it appears to be open from 10:00 - 20:00 daily. I have seen some others that close early on Sundays so I'd check their hours when you make your first visit. http://tinyurl.com/bl9egyu

You can find sometimes gluten free bread at a local "boulangerie" if you ask around. In bigger supermarkets too (like Carrefour,...), they have ranges of special diet food, not unlike "natural food" shops.

To answer the actual question, both Sweden and France are in the European Union, which is among other things a CUSTOMS UNION! This means you can take what you like (other than weapons, narcotic drugs, etc...) across internal EU borders and into France. There are no customs controls anyway, and as far as I know nobody has ever accused gluten-free food of being dangerous to public health which is the only issue that can occasionally justify restrictions on free movement of goods (foot and mouth disease, avian flu..).
