if you want to stay outside of the downtown, in a "neighborhood," I stayed in a tiny, cheap place called the Hotel Modern in the area called Pere LaChaise 4 years ago. In the northeast of Paris. Breakfast is merely coffee and bread and butter (croissant and butter), but it was the BEst coffee I ever had. The concierge tends to his garden between breakfast guests. The room is a shoebox where you walk sideways around your bed to get to the bathroom, but plenty of hot water with a telephone booth=like cylindrical shower. but the windows were dramatically beautiful: nearly floor to ceiling, looking like huge refrigerator doors letting in tons of light. Looking down on the sidestreet, Cite Jolie, which was a cobblestone dead end street. Can it get more romantic than that?? Depends on what you're looking for. Saturday night was very noisy, as the ground floor cafe/tabac stays open till around 2am. C'est la vie!

Hi Kim. Love your picture! If you like smaller intimate hotels than the La Villa Maillot may suit you. Its near the Arc. and Champs Elysees for shopping. I stayed there a couple of year ago and enjoyed the place (Paris hotels are always difficult to assess). It's 4 star but you can get better rooms (some which are split level) and the hotel offers good spa treatments (not that I used them). The hotel has nice art works everywhere. Check it out on: lavillamaillot.fr/uk/navigat... Enjoy your stay John

Looks like our asker Kim wants a proper luxury hotel; so maybe a shoebox-sized room, however romantic, near the Père-Lachaise may not be her idea of the perfect hotel (even one with a green-fingered concierge lovingly tending to her flowers and one with the bonus of windows having the effect of a fridge door). The asker stayed Avenue Montaigne last time she was in Paris, so I have a hunch that Edith Piaf's Paris is not quite her bag. I have no experience of luxury hotels in Paris I'm afraid, but try the Crillon, not a bad little hotel overlooking the Concorde square, reassuringly expensive, as they say. Just do not wander into the lobby in the buff, they are broad-minded but will probably point you in the direction of the nearby Rue de Rivoli quarter, where chic frock shops are in abundance.
