The Seine comes to mind whenever we think of Paris. What about the Canaux de Paris (Paris's canals)? I have heard of St-Denis canal, Ourcq canal and St-Martin. Which is the best? Or which to do first and in which order? Best mean to visit? Any comments will be appreciated. Pierre
The most visited canals are St Martin, Ourcq and the beautiful Bassin de la Villette. There are several cruises on these canals. The short ones (1H / 1H30) are not very interesting because there are a lot of locks. The canals are narrow and you can see more walking on the banks. The longer ones lasts a day and go outside Paris. I do not know the itinerary because I never use them. You can see some pictures on the traveloges "Canals" of my Paris page. I suggest to visit the canal in a half day beginning by the Parc de la Villette (near the Cite des Sciences) and going South along the Canal de l'Ourcq. Both sides (left & right) are equivalent. Then Bassin de la Villette, canal st martin. Then the Boulevards (the canal is underground and covered by a garden). But there is nothing to see when one makes this part of the route in boat. To end at the Porte de l'arsenal. Do not miss the Jardin de l'Arsenal and its roses (if it is the season). Have a good trip RAY

I especially recommend the canal saint Martin at night. Bring a bottle of wine, some cheese and bread, and meet people!! This is the only place in paris where I see strangers talking to each others. Avoid the area on Sundays, as it becomes a pedestrain areas and is colonized by zillions of people, on any non motorized means of transportation you can imagine. I heard great things about the bassin de la Vilette at night. i don't know if it's true. Be aware though that because of its growing success, the area is rapidly changing into a trendy-posh place. I hope it doesn't loose its conviviality. Aparently, the people who live there complained to the Police about the noise. Police patrols tend to disperse crowds of musicians and improvised parties late at night on week ends. I heard it is now illegal for bars on the Canal banks to sell alcohol in take away plastic cups after 9PM. Too bad...
