What is the best way to travel from Paraty to Ilha Grande? from the limited ferry schedule it looks like one early morning ferry from Angra therefore probably bus ? to Angra in the evening, stay overnight and early morning ferry. any thoughts?

The "smaller fast boats" can be quite scary in (unpredictable) rough seas. I'd stick to the ferry.

I think taking a van from Parati to Angra is the best way. The traffic is very light in this route and so there's no risk you late to take the boat (barcas) from Angra to Ilha Grande. The trip takes for a maximum 1:40 hours . This way, you can leave Parati at 7:00 am and arrive at Angra at 8:40h with no worries. Once in Angra, be sure soon as you can about the pier, buy your ticket and relax til the boarding time. Have a nice trip.
