Taxi for a day?

by milliturtle Online Now Nov 1, 2011 at 5:26 PM

Hi, I'm going to Panama City for a week and would like some suggestions. I understand that taxis are pretty cheap based on one of the transportation tips in the Panama City page. However, since I never have much luck with taxis, I'm actually hoping to just hire a taxi for the day rather than dealing with a succession of drivers. Can you give me an idea how much it'll cost? I'd like to be able to see the Miraflores Lock, Casco Viejo, Panama Viejo (i.e. the usual tourist spots). Can this be arranged through the hotel or can I just flag a taxi off the street? Or do you think I should just join a city tour? If so, any recommendations on a reliable tour operator? Thanks!

I just arrived back from Panama City. And my tip for is to negotiate for the price. Usually taxi driver starts with price of about 6-8 dollar from city center to the places you've mentioned. But the real price should be 3-4 dollar and it's quite easy to reduce the price. Don't think you should hire a taxi for a full day. If you need taxi to the airport usually they charge you for 25$ which can be reduced to 20$ but You should know there is also a local bus to the airport that cost about 5$. Your choice. One last thing: If you use a smartphone and want to be connected to the internet and get cheep calls and free incoming calls I bought a Panamanian SIM on Ebay and then charged it on Panama and I had my GPS working and getting live info while traveling which is cool. Just go to www.ebay.com and write search words: "Panama SIM". Enjoy your ride.

Thanks! I'll look into the SIM card thing. I was going to just buy a prepaid SIM card from C&W or Movistar, but will look into the ebay option as well.
