-great/safe neighborhhod
-shops, bars, restaurants in walking distance

    Personally I would recommend the El Cangrejo (The Crab) area of Panama City. The area is very safe and I would not be concerned walking there at any time. It is jammed full of restaurants, big hotels, and casinos. It used to be the Jewish district of the City but has been transformed over the years to the site of a lot of action. Many of the hotels have night clubs as do some of the older restaurants.

    There are also a couple of small and even big supermarkets in the general area including of all things a Costco which I believe is called a pricesmart.

    If you are looking for a place that has great views and is not a hotel I would recommend the http://www.loscuatrotulipanes.com/ which are actually really nice small apartment rentals with some extraordinary views from the units. Great and very helpful management staff. Some of the larger units even have a roof deck. I have been there and recommended it before to others.

    The other place I would recommend is a smaller hotel in about, ithe same area, named the Toscana Inn. Helpful staff, free big breakfast and most importantly the air conditioning really works! Which is definitely not always the case in Latin and South America. Here is a link to their website;

    Panama City is an exciting place with a lot to do and see aside from the canal. I was totally stunned by the number of high rise buildings in the City and how cosmopolitan the City was.

    El Cangrejo and Bellavista are the traditional areas for visitors and tourists. Both are reasonably safe and it is where all the action is.

    The area in Bellavista around Calle Uruguay and next to the Bay is home to a number of international high-end hotels such as Intercontinental (occupying a prime spot on the Bayfront), Le Meridien, Crown Plaza, Hilton et al, and a good area to stay.

    Casco Viejo is home to an increasing number of small boutique hotels housed in historical properties, but it is basically a tourist-only area and far from the action when the sun sets.

    I would stay in either El Cangrejo or Bellavista.

    Enjoy your trip!

    El Cangrejo and Bellavista are the traditional areas for visitors and tourists alike. Both are reasonably safe and close to the action.

    An increasing number of boutique hotels have been opening in Casco Viejo, but basically the area is addressed to tourists only and it is far from the city action when the sun sets.
