I might get the chance of a weekend in tauranga - good oh - so I checked the naked bus and they have reasonable fares but it is quite a long trip. This may be however because they have one change. Perhaps you have an hour to stroll around somewhere interesting - like matamata maybe. But I cannot get the site to tell me where the change will be. Can you help?
i suspect it may be taupo but i would like to be sure newsmans have buses which go direct

I do not know but I would rather suggest it is Rotorua. If you check out routes you see that the major hub is Rotorua. A bus change in Taupo is only indicated for trips to Hawkes Bay. But you would not go via Taupo if you wanted to end up there, as there is a direct route from Palmy to Hawkes Bay. In Rotorua, however, you have three logical choices, with the main route probably carrying on to Cambridge/Hamilton/Auckland. Yes, Newmans (Intercity) goes direct.

i couldn't check the routes kakapo - either their sit was glitching or my computer isn't advanced enough rotorua does make sense

For routes, you have to get to a map of the North Island only. When you drag the mouse over the towns suddenly the itineraries flash up.

I am not sure Jennifer when you are going or if you've been. But I took the bus from New Plymouth to Auckland one time when I had to leave the car in NPL. The two main stops were at Rotorua and Hamilton. There are shorter stops but just to pick up passengers. Hope this helps.
