Auschwitz help?

by Red_Star_Nightmare Online Now Mar 29, 2011 at 3:03 AM

Hey, I was just wondering if there are any rules about leaving flowers at Auschwitz Birkenau? Also, does anyone know any good florists in Krakow? I am going in April.
Thanks :)

Hi Sophie, you can get beautiful flowers in the Market Square, Krakow. I saw a few flowers leaving next to the railway at Auschwitz Birkenau during my visit in Euromeet2010.

Agree that Rynek Glowny, the main market square, is a good place to get your flowers.

I can find no mention of flowers on the official website

    http://en.auschwitz.org.pl/z/

Personally, I would prefer to check with the Tourist Information office in Rynek Glowny about this (the Auschwitz website has no obvious contact for such a query, and the TI people will know the answer). Or you could try emailing them before your visit:

I had the same thoughts as leics about this but I too failed to find anything on the official site.
I did howevr come across a photographic blog of a visit to the site.
All the pictures had a description and one showed a place in front of some entrance doors inside the camp where... "visitors leave flowers and candles to remember and honour the dead" so it seems that this is an accepted custom.

The Jewish tradition is to lay pebbles on a grave to show remembrance. You might consider that, or a candle, in preference to flowers?

I have found the site I referred to above - it is -

    globaldreamers.org/holocaust...

and the candles and flowers were left in front of the "death wall".

For Auschwitz Main Camp, there is a shop selling flowers, candles etc etc beside the entrance of the building. I bought 3 stalks of gerbera orange from the shop, the shopper wrapped them nicely with some leaves for me, I laid them in front of the Death Wall.
