Just curious - why Olongapo? It's not the same since the U.S. Navy pulled out of Subic! There are a lot of expats living in the Angeles City area, many are retired military. Sometimes there are people in other countries who are killed for amounts of money as low as10 too! Muslim terrorism is mostly further south. You do have armed robberies and almost all of the supermarkets, Seven Eleven stores, malls, hotels and of course banks have armed guards outside the door. But many expats live there safely year after year. Relocating is a big deal. You have to have a source of income, if you intend to reside for any length of time you have to have proper visas or permission from the government. If you have not had much experience living in Asia at all then perhaps you ought to also check out Thailand! There are many expats living in Thailand too, especially in the Pattaya area. I was in the Philippines again, just around 40 days ago. I don't have any problems with the P.I. but I have been in and around Asia for a long time. Of the two countries I would probably choose Thailand over the Philippines for living in permanently. But they are very similar in many ways - except that the Filipinos speak more English and drive on the same side of the road as America. Thailand is better organized to handle tourism, hotels are cheaper and the transportation is real good. In the P.I. the beer is cheaper, there are frequent "happy hours" in bars and lots of newspapers are printed in English. Visit first then decide. Talk to some of the expats that reside overseas and see what they say. Hal

As the other two posters have said, you can get killed anywhere in the world for your money. No one place has that market cornered. You can get killed for a lot less in the US. Ever heard of road rage? I too am curious as to why Olongopo? You meet someone online or something. Angeles would be much better for what you are considering just for the number of expats in the area.

Killed for as little as10 you say? Recently some innocent people were killed for NO money or reason at all. You know where it happened? Virginia Tech, USA. If you're from the US, why don't you just stay there where people (including nut cases) could legally possess guns? Perhaps you'll feel safer.

Even with its problems and its reputation for lawlessness, the Philippines has a lower firearm murder rate per 100000 than the USA. In other words, an American is more likely to be shot dead in his own country than a Filipino in his.

    SAFETY CONCERNS

by Travel2write Online Now Jun 8, 2007 at 1:23 AM

Forest Gump said "Stupid is what stupid does". Most victims of crime are idiots that flash large amounts of cash in bad neigborhoods, are idiots out drunk in bad neighborhoods or just idiots. Before even imagining you would relocate anywhere, you would be smart to visit there first. If you don't feel safe outside normal surroundings, recommend you go with a friend. Travel2write

I have traveled there twice and I would suggest you go ahead and make the trip. I am from one of the inner cities of USA where walking around anytime can get you killed... I followed the simple advice of others that had been there or visited before. First always pay attention to your surroundings, and do not walk around like a rich boy from America, you know the gold chains and designer clothing. Also keep you manners sharp and be polite to everyone, a little smile sometime will break the ice, and like someone else suggested, if your drinking dont be hanging out with a bunch of strangers. And of course dont flash cash, Follow those rules and you should have a nice trip. And if you can make friends with some locals ahead of time and ask them which areas to avoid that will help also. Make the trip and you will be back again and again, just like me. Good luck, Joseph

Just like what the other vt members tells you. You should visit the place first if you think the place is safe and if you think that its good to relocate here then go for it. Everywhere in the world there are people who do this and that killing stuff for money but to tell you honestly I’ve been robbed here by money he get my cellphone only coz I don’t have money and he even ***ing squeeze my breast but I still can say I am lucky why? Coz he didn’t stab me! He is pointing a knife in my nick it happens really fast!...But here I am still living here.. Good luck for your plan and God Bless You.

ALl the qood advices given so far. Make a visit first, hang around with a local if at all possible, don't flash cash but flash a smile, leave behind your jewelries, ( wear a casio calculator watch-useful), drink but be sober enough to know what's going on around you, stay out of the gambling areas, and learn the way the locals do... in no time, you'll have a very good time !!! for me I bought a condo in Makati... less visible, close proximity to the luxurious necessities we are used to in Calif, nearby hospital, etc.. keep a low profile personality....have fun !!!
