      Oslo airport transfer time

      Oslo Jan 19, 2016 at 4:48 PM

Hi all: What would be a reasonable and safe amount of time to allocate to arrive in Oslo on one airline, deplane, collect baggage, and check in on another airline bound for Bangkok? Is the airport in Oslo efficient and easy to negotiate?
      Thanks in advance.

I am looking for an isolated cabin in northern europe

      Norway Jan 18, 2016 at 11:12 AM

Hello, I am looking for a remote lodge scandinavia, iceland or estonia. I don't need much; the more rustic it is the better. The idea is to stay for 6 months there were I can remove myself from all, live like an hermit if you will. The goal is to reconnect with the nature and meditate, ideally a cabin close to a lake.
So I am asking the dear virtual tourist community where can I find such place ?

thanks in advance for your time
      cordially andrea

Ps: my price cap is around 400€ per month

    • First Visit to Norway, help needed with plan

      Norway Feb 2, 2016 at 11:33 AM

I am senior, experienced traveler and travel solo. I considered taking escorted tour which travels from UK airports to Bergen continuing on coach to hotel in Balestrand for 7 nights half board. I live in US and could travel from Manchester, Gatwick or Bristol. There are 2 or 3 free days to do sightseeing. Some of the day tours are included, others optional. Group will travel by boat to Bergen to see city plus stop at harbor. A day tour to see Jostedal Glacier and northern landscapes beyond Fjords. Optional visit to see Glacier and Museum. Norway in Nutshell, riding Flamsbane line, Mydral to Flam, 20k. descent, 2 hr. cruise thru Aurlands fjord to Gudvangen. Included trip to Sognefjord to Kaupanger. Hotel is near the Balestrand village. Need to hear the areas mentioned in the tours are the most scenic or if there are better choices that can be done if traveling independently. Is it easy to travel in Norway to some of the popular scenic areas without having to pay for the tour. If it can be done I would save the supplements for solo traveler and might be able to get flights to Bergen for less. I did see that Norwegian air has non stop flight from Manchester to Bergen and I could book Aer LIngus to Dublin on to Manchester. Is it easy to prebook bus, train land ferry tickets. I would plan making this journey before end of August. Need guidance from travelers who know the scenic areas in Norway. If I decide not to book this tour, can one travel easily in Norway by public transportation and ferry? Is Balestrand a convenient base? Any suggestions for other base that might be more convenient for taking day trips and help with hotels. I am experienced hiker and active so try to pack as much as possible into my trips. I like visiting historic areas, museums and photography.  Many thanks to all.

What to wear in February and vegan food.

      Tromsø Jan 16, 2016 at 4:37 AM

I'm travelling to Tromsø and the lofoten islands in February of this year and I am interested to know what clothing is appropriate.

I plan to wear a heattech thermal base layer, fleece zip up mid layer and parka outer layer with mittens (thermal gloves for photography) and trapper hat (my ears are very sensitive to the cold!

However what about trousers? How many layers are enough to keep warm? I have leg warmers and thick socks but I've read mixed reviews about whether to wear hiking boots or snow boots.

We plan to go hiking / trailing the northern lights / husky sledding (and general off the track exploring for photography) we'll also like to visit museums and the like around town. Any advice would be brilliant.

I'm also vegan so am wondering how available vegetarian options or alternatives are on offer in restaurants or fish places and whether Tromsø has a supermarket close to the town centre where we'll be staying.

(Last but not least, has anyone got experience of good hiking trails with great landscape views that are reachable on foot from the town?)

      Thank you in advance :-)

To Trondheim (maybe Bergen) by car

      Norway Jan 27, 2016 at 12:42 AM

Thinking of driving to Trondheim and maybe Bergen by car in August.

We are two adults and a pet. Recommendations where to stay in Trondheim?
How are the roads in August from Trondheim to Bergen? Lots of head spinning cliffs and narrow roads? I'm scared of heights.

We are thinking of taking the ferry from Wasa to Umeå (Sweden), then drive through Sweden and end up to Trondheim. We are trying to avoid Stockholm. According to map I suppose there is a green valley and road to drive to Trondheim?

    • Help with western Norway itinerary

      Norway Jan 26, 2016 at 4:02 PM

We will be in Norway for a week in late April after a week in Netherlands, where we will have spent a week in Amsterdam. We are a family of 6 with children ages 21, 18, 15, 13. We are reasonably adventurous and primarily are wanting to see the beauty of Norway, other than our time in Oslo.

      Our plan is:
-2 nights in Oslo, primarily to visit our ancestral villages in the area; we aren't planning on spending as much time in the city (1.5 days)
--Norway in Nutshell Oslo-Bergen (all day)
-2 nights in Bergen (one full day to see the city)
      -1 night (2 days) UNKNOWN
      -2 nights Stavanger (hike Preikestolen)

First off, do the known parts of this itinerary seem doable? I know that we aren't spending much time in Oslo, but with all the beauty out west, it seemed the more efficient thing to do. NIN would give us the chance to see a beautiful section of the country while travelling west. Is one day enough in Bergen? I assume the Preikestolen hike takes most of the day? What will the travelling, weather, and scenery be like in late April? I understand that some things are still closed in April.

The primary thing I would like advice on is how to handle the undetermined 2 days and 1 night between Bergen and Stavanger. I am thinking of renting a van and possibly taking two days to get down to Stavanger, staying somewhere along the way to break up the trip and see the country. Was thinking of seeing Hardangerfjord and travelling south from there. Any recommendations on this? Where would be the place to stay, and primary things to see? Another option could be to spend 2 nights somewhere, and only spend 1 night in Stavanger, after the Preikestolen hike. Or should we stay in the Bergen area or the Sognefjord area and maximize our time there, taking the Kystbussen bus down to Stavanger or fly. (I have heard that there no longer is an express boat from Bergen to Stavanger).

Keep in mind that Stavanger is a must because we fly out from there, are Preikestolen is a priority.

      Thanks for your help!

    • Best Way to Visit Pulpit Rock in This Situation?

      Norway Jan 9, 2016 at 10:30 AM

We are planning a trip to Norway and will be able to arrive there in June 4. We do not have to join our Geirangerfjord/Norway Nutshell tour until sometime on the 6th. We'd very much like to fir Pulpit Rock in on the 5th. We are willing to fly to the nearest city with an airport. Answers/suggestions for the following questions would be very much appreciated:
      1) In what town/city should we stay (Stananger?)?
      2) Without a car, who is the best way for use to see the rock?
      3) Is there anything else we should/could do while staying in #1?
      4) Anyone suggest any good places to dine while in the recommendation for #1?

Thanks much in advance. Looking forward to your replies/suggestions.

    • Norwegian Cruise Excursions tips requests

by NikPhua Online Now Aug 14, 2015 at 8:37 AM

Thank you Dabs for your detail transportation information from Olden Cruise terminal to Briksdal. Taking the public bus is so cheap and seems easy. Five of us are thinking of doing the same but are concern about the availability. Is there only one bus at each departure time?
We will be on Princess Caribbean deaprting Southampton on August 29 and docking at Stavanger, Olden, Hellesylt, Geiranger and Bergen. In Geiranger, the bus tours to MOUNT DALSNIBBA & FLYDALS GORGE are fully booked. Does anyone have alternate economical suggestions? We appreciate any tips shared.
      Thank You.

    • Transport from Olden Port to Briksdal Glacier. We are arriving on the 9th September 2014/

by hotlady29 Online Now Jul 19, 2014 at 9:18 AM

We will be in port from 8 am to 3pm and would like to go and see Briksdal Glacier. Have arranged a party of 12 adults and are looking to arrange transport to and from Glacier.
I know that we have to walk to the Glacier and that it is about 40 - 45 minutes each way.
Can you recommend transport options for us as I understand that the local bus does not run in September
      Thank you

    • Olden and Briksdal Glacier

by tonydori Online Now May 8, 2008 at 3:58 PM

Hello, next month we are going on a cruise and one of the stops is Olden. I am looking at the possibility of organising our own excursion to see Briksdal Glacier (not to walk on it) I imagine there must be some kind of local transportation from Olden to the Glacier but so far I have been unsuccesful in finding buses, car rentals, etc. Does anybody know if there are buses that connect these two points and if so provide info. Thank you very much.
