Trying to plan a trip to Odense...need LOTS of help!

by eneilson Online Now Sep 27, 2010 at 8:27 AM

Hi all, New here, and frankly quite new to travel in general. I've never left the states, and after getting out of a long term relationship, I think it's time I do. My great grandfather came to America from Odense; I want to find out who I am, and where I'm from. Being new to international travel, I don't know where to start when planning this trip. Here is what I know... * I'd like the trip to last for a total of two weeks. * I'd like to spend the majority of time in Odense, but perhaps take some time to check out other interesting nearby areas. Money is a big concern, and I want to be able to do this as inexpensively as possible, but without sacrificing my own comfort. Thus, I need suggestions on - * Travel * Lodging * Food (would like to splurge a bit on this...) With that said, what should I know about Odense/Denmark/traveling abroad in general that I probably don't at the moment? I plan on visiting at the beginning of December; is this a good/bad time of the year to visit? Any and all help is MUCH appreciated!

While you are waiting for replies you could browse these members pages on Odense. Odense Travel Guide It is some time since I passed through Odense - I loved all the places we visited in Denmark from Copenhagen across to Esberg. I will just comment that we found eating out expensive add a glass/bottle of wine and it was really, really expensive. Good Luck on your travels and in your family history search and - of course Welcome to VT!

Thanks! I should also note that I'll be traveling alone. Is Odense a safe enough place to do so? I don't speak a word of Danish...

I don't think you need have any worries about travelling alone, nor about language.Danish people are used to English speaking tourists and very friendly and helpful.

December is definitely not the friendliest time to visit Denmark. Weather is likely to be wet, windy and cold.

If you are in Odense for a couple of weeks then you might wanna have a look at the castle "Egeskov" which is on the same island as Odense. And towns like Kerteminde and Faaborg are pretty little seaside towns too.

i have to be honest; I'm sort of looking forward to this type of weather. I live in Maine, so I'm no stranger to it.

If you don´t mind the weather then you are fine and at least you will get the town in christmas decoration.

Hello, You are staying there a long time. Do you speak the language? There are ferry boats that go across to Sweden, that take about an hour. You can go there for the day and come back. It isn't too expensive. You have to get to Helsingor, which is not too far. There is a castle there that is the one used in the Play Hamlet. Helsingør (Danish pronunciation: [hɛlseˈŋøɐ̯ˀ]; in English also known as Elsinore) is a city and the municipal seat of Helsingør municipality on the northeast coast of the island of Zealand (Sjælland) in eastern Denmark. This is kind of a must see, if you are in the area. Denmark is small.... good luck.

Excellent. Can anyone recommend lodging, food or other "must-sees" in Odense or nearby? In terms of food, I'd like to experience true, authentic Danish cuisine, as well as perhaps one night of fine-dining.

Are you looking for a better hotel or a budget hotel? For food you might wanna try this place in the center of Odense which also has it´s own brewery: bryggeriet.dk/eng/breweries/...

I never tried it, but if I were you then I would give it a tryA "kro" is a very typical old fashioned danish place to eat and I think you should try that while in Denmark.

So if I was to travel from Odense to eat at a place like that, how would I do so? I won't have a vehicle.
