Anybody have any experience of walking independently in the Oaxaca Valley area using Oaxaca City as a base and using local buses. Critically what is the availability of good local maps suitable for walking
Look for the local buses parked in the corners of the Oaxaca bus station. These will take you out to the more remote rural areas and villages. Try it first as a day trip/ reconnaisance. The villages and towns are not characaterized by "urban sprawl" ;8)- you can get into some very nice country on short hikes.
