Looking for companion to travel from UK to Lourdes, France via Ryan Air.

      London Jun 5, 2013 at 6:20 AM

I am not too sure if these is the right place to find a traveling companion. I have a good friend, partially blind who has free accommodation for 8 days (starting 22 June 2013) inside the Santuario in Lourdes, France. She is looking for a femaile companion to qualify for this free accommodation.
As I said, its a femail , around 58 years old. She is very dependent and lovely Asian . Before she started losing her sight she worked as a journalists. Thank you for giving me the opportunity putting this on VT. God Bless you all!

Best Tourist route round 'Cornish Alps'

      Cornwall May 21, 2013 at 2:53 AM

I would hate to drive round the china clay area, near St Austell, not know where the best vantage point was for photographs. I have looked at some spectacular photos in books but they don't say exactly where they were taken or if there are any access restrictions. Can anyone help?
Also, is there more than one access road (gate) to the Eden Project or does everyone have to approach from the same side?

    • Easiest way to get a shower?

      Heathrow May 27, 2013 at 10:28 PM

      Hello all,

I have an 8 hour layover between two long haul flights (11am-7pm). I am arriving in/leaving from T5. I would really like to take a quick shower during this stop over. l know that there are hotels landside and airside (T3) as well as lounge options.

My questions is: what is the easiest option? Will I even be allowed to go from T5 to T3 airside (and what would that entail-- ie trips through security, time, etc). Alternatively, how much of a hassle would it be to go landside? Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Lake District National Park Jun 3, 2013 at 11:58 AM

Hi guys, my parents are flying over here from Canada and I thought a trip to the Lake District might be nice...however I've noticed that trains with East Midlands only go to either Bootle (Cumbria) or Oxenholme...which seem about an hour drive from the National Park. Do you have any tips on how to get closer to the park? Any recommendations on where to stay?

      Thanks so much!

    • Meeting up at Heathrow after customs

      Heathrow May 21, 2013 at 3:26 AM

I apologize for re-posting this question but I am a newbie and I don't know how to remove my first question.

I don't think that I was very clear in that query. Please let me try again. I am landing on a BA flight at LHR Terminal 5 on Sunday mid morning. A friend, who is also flying BA, is expected to arrive at LHR Terminal 5 a couple of hours later.

Is there a comfortable place (with luggage in tow) that I can watch the screens to see the status of her flight and wait for her to clear customs we can then meet up so we can then proceed to the Heathrow Express?

      Thanks everyone for your patience!

Eurostar ticket advance purchase London Brussels

      London May 21, 2013 at 10:21 AM

Other VT's have advised to purchase Eurostar tickets in advance for trips for example London Brussels changing to Amsterdam. How much time in advance is recommenced to get a good price? We are now looking at 3 months from now/May 26st. Also there are 4 seniors traveling together, if that makes any difference. In Brussels changing trains to Amsterdam, there is 15 minutes between trains, does that seem like enough?
Thanks to all in advance, Chuck

      Hadrian's Wall

      Northumberland Mar 2, 2011 at 6:38 PM

I'm thinking about doing a day trip from Newcastle to visit part of the wall. I'm hoping to take the AD122 bus to Housesteads and then walk from there to Milecastle Inn and hopefully catch the bus back. According to the bus schedule, I can get there at around 10:30 and have to make it to Milecastle Inn by 16:30, so I have less than 6 hours to get there. Based on the 15 circular walks guide I downloaded from the Hadrian's Wall site, this section is marked as "strenuous" and about 6-7 miles long. Has anyone actually walked there before and can tell me if it is as strenuous as the guide said? How long would it take for someone in average shape to complete this? I can do distance but am less comfortable with hills (as there are none back home). Since I have limited time, if it would take too long (say more than 4 hours continuous), I'll probably have to stop at Steel Rigg instead. Thanks.

    • Travel plans - Hadrians Wall - Roman sites

      Northumberland Jul 5, 2008 at 10:00 PM

In mid October 08, after a stay in the Highlands my wife and I are considering train to Carlisle and hiring a car. We are visiting the south of the Eden Valley - Appleby, Long Marton, Dufton - where my family originally farmed (from at least 17th Cent) before settling in Oz in 1850s. We also want to see the Lakes District and spend a few days visiting Roman sites along the Wall. We expect to have 4 full days and 2 part days before train to Bath. We are considering using a central base (hotel or B & B) and driving out to accomplish our travel interests. We think these ideas are achievable given the distances involved - or lack of them. It all seems so small and compact compared to travelling in Oz. We would be grateful for any comments, criticisms or tips about the above; recommendations about accomodation; must see places along the Wall - Vindolanda and Cawfields seem to me to be definites. many thanks

travel from Newcastle - Holy Island Jan 08

      Northumberland Feb 22, 2007 at 5:16 PM

Hi, I'm looking at taking a short trip to Holy Island as my UK stopver between South Asia and Canada. I have a window of only a few days and would need to get to Lindisfarne from Newcastle airport approx 2 pm Thurs Jan 3, and then back again in 2 days. I know there is a train to Berwick-on-Tweed, although timing is everything with the tides. I have been trying to enquire about ordering a private shuttle-taxi to take me there, and then pick me up again (to be dropped off at a Newcastle hotel on the Saturday). Unfortunately my queries seem to be ignored even though I'm only asking for a possible price compared to renting a car (which I know could be even more expensive, and I may need an international driver's permit along with my Canadian driver's license). Do any of you know of a shuttle service that can be ordered between Newcastle and the island?? Normally I would get a train from Newcastle to Berwick, then a taxi from there, but time is not a luxury that day... thanks for advice...

      Various tips

      Northumberland Jan 6, 2004 at 5:52 AM

Hubby and I have plans to see Northumberland too next time we visit family in Lincolnshire. None of us can drive so we wonder if it is possible to leave the mainline and main roads by bus/coach too between places other than major towns? Any good link to county transport? Things we have in mind are: Alnwick - a must since brother-in-law had a shop there once and I want to see the castle. Bamburgh - a must for an Ivanhoe fan who loves beaches Lindisfarne - well I'm Scandinavian...hehe Hadrians Wall - how and where by bus to still see an interesting part? Anything else we "must" do? We plan to go around Easter. Any special events? Closing days (hubby feels more Swedish than English these days)?
