Can someone tell me what it would cost for 5 -7 days in Northern Thailand if we stayed in modest hotels and. Are buses a good way to travel the country side?
Depends where in Northern Thailand but I paid around £3 for a dorm room so I'm guessing that a guesthouse with a private room would be no more than £10 in general in the North. I found that buses are a good and cheap way to travel around the north as well as anywhere in Thailand. If you suffer from travel sickness, stock up on the meds as the roads can be bumpy and winding, and the driving can be erratic! where in the north are you planning on going?

Hello here and welcome to VT. It is always difficult to talk budgets specifically and Thailand is not the ludicrously cheap place it once was but if you use dorm rooms as suggested and eat street food (my favourite anyway and often indescribably tasty) tyou oculd get by on £20 a day. I'm sorry, I don't know what currency you use but you can do a quick conversion. Buses are not only a good way to get round in that region but often the only way. There is the main train line from Bangok through Lampang (excellent place to visit) to Chiang Mai but for just about anywhere else the bus is the only option. As Nisha mentions, the driving can be sketchy to say the least but I find Thai buses to be pretty comfortable inexpensive if a little noisy from the interminable videos they play. One tip for the buses, especially at night is to take a warm top, the air-con is often set to something a polar bear would feel comfortable in! Hope this assists, fergy.

Buses are fine although some routes have minivans that are faster and cost a little more. Modest hotels should be available for less than 1000 baht, food at night markets should be covered by 200 baht (3 different plates + rice for the two of you. Restaurants are fairly cheap too, certainly 400 baht will be enough for a meal for two if you choose a modest restaurant. You can get overnight sleeper train to Chiang Mai or fly. When my wife and i are in Thailand we normally stay in guest houses and eat at night markets with the occasional restaurant and get by on less than 1500 baht a day but i suspect that you may consider spending more, perhaps 2,500 a day.

Depends on how remote you are traveling to. Main cities and towns are well-covered by buses and/or minivans. For smaller places, there can be a long wait or you have to hire the whole car. When I went up to Mae Salong (in Chiang Rai province) a few years ago, I had to wait for a while until there are more people in the songtaew (local truck).
