We would arrive at JFK in the morning (8 am, Terminal 4) and plan to travel to Boston the same day by bus. We are 2 adults and 2 small kids with luggage. We have been to some countries together but this will be our first time to the US – 2+ weeks vacations starting from the 2nd week of December.
From some Internet search, it seems that first we have to make it to Manhattan from JFK to catch the bus to New England – although I’d have preferred bypassing NYC which does not seem possible (?).
Please suggest how to do that as a first timer. Which ticket we should buy, how, and where? We would like to use public transport but may use the taxi if that is necessary. Just to mention, we plan to come back to NYC later.
For NYC-Boston, we intend to take the late afternoon (3-4 pm) bus connection so that we are not rushed. In the best case scenario it looks like that we could reach NYC around afternoon, and will have a few hours to roam/relax around. Would that be a good strategy? Can we leave our luggage at the bus station safely for a few hours (e.g. Megabus)?
We contemplated about staying one night in NYC before moving ahead to Boston but decided otherwise due to reasons.
Hi, I'm going to PE at Christmas for a surf trip and I would like to know if it gets really crowded at this time of the year...like too crowded. Will there be too many people in the water?
Is the area around Marriott Stanton South Beach a good location to stay? And this hotel specifically is it good & safe and is this near the topless beach area in Miami South beach? Also looking for any recommendations for things to do in this area. Thanks, Chuck
We are looking for things to do that are not part of an excursion. We only have 5 days and are at an all inclusive. No need for lunch and tours - just the sport itself. Mostly interested in parasailing and going to cenotes but kids want horseback riding.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanx!

Here is the initial itinerary following my first post on the topic: Family Visiting US for the First Time - 2 Weeks Vacations - United States of Ame
Fellow VTers please comment, keeping in view the weather, experience, budget, and that we are a family with two small kids (3 & 5):
Dec 9 Arrive NY
Dec 10 NY-Washington DC
Dec 11-13 Washington DC Sight Seeing
Dec 14 Washington to Orlando
Dec 15-18 Orlando Sight Seeing with at least one day at Disney (Magic Kingdom or Animal Kingdom)
Dec 19 Orlando - NYC
Dec 20-23 NYC Sight Seeing
Dec 24 Return Flight from NYC
Tips on sightseeing and logistics will be highly welcome.
For Orlando, we plan to buy United Airlines budget tickets. We took budget airlines in other parts of the world but this will be our first time in the US. So any tips regarding booking of budget airlines will be very useful. Especially about the luggage.
Disney: Keeping in view the age of our kids which one of Magic Kingdom or Animal Kingdom shall we choose if we have to choose one? Feeling as if not going to Magic Kingdom will be criminal(?)
We are a 4 member family; Mikael 3, Misha 5, Urooba 20s, and myself 30s. Next month we plan to visit the US for vacations for 2 weeks. This will be our first time to the US – although we had been to family vacations before (Singapore, Nepal, Egypt, Bali, Malaysia, Sri Lanka).
Before buying the return tickets, within next 2-3 days, I would like to have comments and suggestions on the following from the fellow VTers:
Timing of the Trip:
Option 1: December 8 – 25
Option 2: December 25 – January 13
Please suggest which Option would be better. I am thinking that it will be too crowded and hence expensive during the Option 2 (?). Is it too late if we go for the Option 1?
Plan A: New York – Washington – Orlnado – Houston (3-4 days each place)
Plan B: New York and nearby places (4-5 hours drive)
Please suggest which itinerary one should opt for their first trip to the US? We expect to visit again in the coming years.
Preferences: some tourist attractions, places/activities of kids’ interest. Budget friendly. It is expected that we will be staying with friends/family at least during some of the days.
Since this is our first time and I have just started planning (a little late, I know) so all type of suggestions and information will be highly helpful and appreciated.
Hello! i´m planning to go to Banff, Jasper and every beautiful place there, but i would like go to big cities too like Montreal Toronto etc. I will go in May 2016 and have 1 month to go to all those places but dont know where to start. Hi guys! Me and my friends are coming to Las Vegas in June 16 celebrating my 21st. Neither of us have ever been to America before so we don't know where to start. We're just looking for some advice really. We've booked everything regarding flights accommodation and all our trips. We just want to know is it expensive to eat and drink out? If there's anything you can recommend on where to go and what to see would be fantastic.
Thanks in advanced
Looking to take week long motorcycle vacation with wife and friends, wondering about best time of year, places to stay(safe, affordable and place to park motorcycles. Places to see in and out of New Orleans
I'm considering buying a vacation home in Tahoe City having visited several times over the past few years.
My concern is the price of property there is high and I'm worried if I wanted to sell in 5-10 years time would I at least get my money back.
If you live there yourself or have any information on this it would be greatly appreciated!
We arrive in Cancun on Feb. 5 and I just discovered that it's Constitution Day. But the information at timeanddate.com and Wikipedia says that it is observed on the first Monday in February regardless of which day is the actual holiday. Does that mean businesses are open as usual on Friday Feb. 5, 2016? I was planning to get a SIM card at Movistar right after we got off the plane. Thanks!
We are from Toronto and will be travelling to Quebec City on the holidays. What can we do on Christmas day aside from spending it in a hotel?
I have a 20 hour stopover in New York when flying to Mexico, so I booked a hotel near the airport.
On my ESTA I filled in "yes" to the next question : "Is your travel to the us occuring in transit to another country?"
Are they gonna allow me to go outside the airport?
Is it true that everybody with an ESTA can go outside the airport?
I'm a bit confused about this. There must be many people ho have done this.
Please let me know if it's OK.
Hi New Yorkers. I would be grateful for your help.
I will be arriving in New York on 21st December in the afternoon and leaving on the evening of the 28th.
I will require a single trip from Jamaica into Manhattan on the E train to get to my hotel and then I want an 7 day card that I will use from the 22nd until my departure on the 28th.
My question is, can I just take my single trip card and get it loaded at a booth for 7 days on the 22nd or is the 7 day card a different type? Many thanks. Roy.
We are seniors and driving a rear wheel vehicle from Las Vegas to Tucson Arizona in mid January. What is the best route to Tucson to escape the snow if there is one? What is the fastest route to Flagstaff if the roads are clear? Thanks.
I'll be in Austin in the middle of December and am attracted to the 6th Street District nightlife. In which bars/pubs/nightclubs would people, in their 60s, gather? I feel out of place in joints, where only kids in their 20s fill the place.
Not sure if my post posted. I am looking to find out about local transportation in and around Rye Ny in December. Don't see where there is any local city bus service. Any recommendations would be appreciated, as need to keep it affordable.
Hi, I'm looking for feedback about the New York Pass (1 Card to see over 80 Attractions in NYC). My daughter (28 yrs) and I (49 yrs) will be going to NYC next September for 5 days, we are on a budget, and wondering if the pass is worth it? Thx, Cheryl
We're looking for ideas on where next to visit.
So far we've been to:
Los Angeles (including Santa Barbara & Venice Beach), San Francisco, Las Vegas, Seattle, Chicago, Memphis, NOLA, Houston, San Antonio, Orlando, DC, Philly, NYC, Providence, Boston.
We're looking at Easter (March / April) for around 3 weeks and have 2 kids aged 8 & 13. As it will still be cool for us (from tropical Australia) were thinking more mid to Southern areas?
As an idea, our top 3 favourite places have been - NY, DC, San Antonio.
Least favourite 3 - Las Vegas, Memphis, Houston.
We love places with lots to see and do (landmarks, attractions) but NOT into theme parks, nor food.
Would love suggestions on 3-4 major places to visit and happy to fly, train, or fly between destinations.
He I am my friends (8 people) and me we're going to J-T for all day tomorrow and the night too.
One of us have heard about a place that you can have free cabins like chalet and tepees. You just need to be there first to get it ! But problem nobody knows where that place is !
Here is my question, anybody hear about this place and knows where it is please ?
Ps: I already call the park and visitor center in Joshua Tree they don't know about it.
I'm planning a road trip from Denver to Las Vegas in December vacation (24 Dec to 2nd Jan). I would like to know about the feasibility of the trip.
The road trip will include Arches National Park, Monument Valley, Antelope Canyon, Horseshoe bend and Grand canyon West rim ending at Las Vegas.
Denver --> Arches ---> Monument Valley --> Antelope ---> Las Vegas
25-26th ---> 27th ---> 28th ----> 29th ------> 30th
I'm mostly worried about snow and slippery roads. I have never driven on snow.
But from other articles and forums i came to know that the snow is cleared very soon.
1. Do we need snow chains and shovel and other snow equipment ?
2. Will all the national parks and attractions open and worth watching during that time of the year?
3. What are the chances of getting stuck in snow storms ( how frequent is it generally .. just an idea) ?
4. Anyone who has personal experience of this route during winters and would like to share something important is welcome.
5. Is it feasible and should we go ahead with the plan ??
Thanks in Advanced
