I am planning a week's visit for my parents, myself and my brother (all adults). We love to see and do as much as possible, particularly historic places and fun activities. Unfortunately my parents cannot walk too far these days. Would you recommend we book onto a package tour or hire a car and do our own thing ad hoc? Thanks!
Hire a car. The costs are reasonable, roads good and not a lot of traffic (or roads for that matter). A car would also give you flexibility to head to various restaurants which are scattered a little around the main areas. Enjoy

The problem with a package tour is that you don't own your time. In consideration to your parents and to afford you more time in places that you think you'd like to spend more time (or less time in places you don't find interesting), it would be better to get a car and plan your own trip. It might even come in cheaper considering that there are 5 of you.
