      Mongol Rally through Russia

      Russia May 5, 2013 at 5:26 PM

Does anyone have experience with the areas of Russia that the Mongol Rally generally goes through (i.e. the northern coast of the Caspian between Ukraine and Kazakhstan, and the Altai region crossing from Kazakhstan to Mongolia). especially the border crossings, and driving a foreign vehicle through these regions? What can we expect?

      Safety of Dubna Russia?

      Dubna May 2, 2013 at 12:23 PM

I will be going to Dubna for five weeks this summer and was wondering how safe it is as a whole. I am looking to do some morning running and want to make sure that this is advisable. What is crime like in the city? Are there areas to avoid, times to avoid being out alone (of course middle of the night, but otherwise). My assumption is that it is quite a safe place due to it being a scientific town with a relatively small size, but I would like to make sure before I go.

Will running be a problem or hazardous, or will I be fine if I exercise the normal precautions used when running elsewhere?

      Evening program

Saint Petersburg May 20, 2013 at 11:43 AM

      Hi,

I will be in St-P for work for three days next week.
When looking at the evening events St-P offers, ballet in one of the theaters seems to be a good call. Is it possible to buy tickets last-minute? Or are they often sold out in advance?

Also, is it possible to join an existing city tour last-minute? I can't really say in advance which day I will be having the most time to do this but I definately want to explore St-P a bit.

Thanks lot for your kind assistance.

    • Secured Train reservations.

      Moscow May 3, 2013 at 3:56 AM

I wish to take a Trans Mongolian Train Trip from Moscow to Beijing with stop overs in Irkutz and then Ulan Bator. I have had a previous bad experience (not Russia) of buying and paying for tickets on line which was never secured or my money refunded. I am also concerned about being charged at the whim of the vendor. On line I see Real Russia is recommended as an agency to buy these tickets from. Please assist. I need to secure with reputable suppliers for accommodation & transport in proof to apply for a Russian Visa here in South Africa.

      Which Hotel?

      Moscow May 10, 2013 at 4:53 AM

I have oportunity to visit Moscow( won the trip) but i only have limited choice of hotels.
      There are 4 choices:

      • Maxima Zarya ( Description)

The hotel is located in a quiet residential area north of Moscow's centre, within walking distance of Petrovsko-Razumovskaya metro station. The hotel enjoys vicinity with Estate Ostankino, Palace of Count Sheremetyev, All-Russian Exhibition Centre and magnificent Botanical Garden.

      • Maxima Slavija ( Description )

The hotel is located in the VDNH area, just off a busy road leading to Moscow's centre. There is a shopping mall and supermarket open 24 hours a day only minutes from the hotel.Hotel is conveniently located on Yaroslavskoe shosse not far from the All-Russia Exhibition Centre (V.V.C.) and Ostankino television centre. You will see beautiful "Elk Island" ("Losiny Ostrov") national park out of your windows.

      • Cosmos:( Discription)

Hotel Cosmos is located to the north of Moscow city centre on Prospekt Mira. It is situated adjacent to the exhibition centre VDNKh, and next to the metro station of the same name.

      • Maxima Panorama

Maxima Panorama arrangement is one of the most important advantages of this hotel – just a few meters from metro station “Avtozavodskaya”, in a business part of Moscow: 4 Masterkova str., 115280, Moscow.

Flight is to and from Domodedjevo, in some istances is just over 60km away.
      Any idea on transfer?
Last time i was in Moskva, was in 1987 and we stayed in Student Dorm.
I experianced Moskva Metro, and I am more than Ok using it.After all i lived in London for 4 years!
My question for you Moscovites it which of this hotels has easiest access to the Center, Kremljin, Sv Vasilij Church, Red Square....
I kept looking at the Metro Map, but what i see on the map is not the nessesary fastes and straitforward way getting to the center and I get totally confused.
      Any help appriciated.

    • Alcohol! Whats the deal? Nizhniy Novgorod

by cgard1 Online Now Nov 6, 2012 at 1:56 PM

I am traveling to Nizhniy Novgorod this New Years / Christmas and would like to pick up some wine and whiskey (not vodka) for the holidays. However, my one friend there says that she does not know where to buy anything "real". She said with the problems in Russia you never know what you are buying - apparently the last two times she drank wine she was poisoned and believes most of the alcohol being sold in Nizhniy is black market fake. She said she only buys from duty free when she travels. Anyone able to speak to this? Other people I talk to in cities like Kazan don't seem to have problems like this! Also, is there such thing as rental cars in Nizhny? It seems easy in Moscow but I cant find anything in this town...and its not as if this is a small village.... Thanks for any help!!!! (My first trip to Russia and its pretty damn exciting)

There is a tour to this city in January 2005 to meet the single women for marriage. Apparently the women of this city are very nice and beautiful, yet undiscovered by the rest of the world. There will be social activities and tourism always with an eye to meeting someone who could turn out to be your soul mate :-) Sounds nice, except that this place looks like it would be rather cold and bleak in winter. Does anyone know about the ladies as potential wives. Are they educated, cultured, honest, and home loving as well as beautiful? Just how bad (or good) is the weather in January? I do not speak Russian (only English and Spanish) and am older than most of the ladies, but am a widower. So I like to make my trips like this to be both fun and educational as well as romantically linked. Please send your comments to me as soon as you can, even if you miss the January 2005 tour date as I may or may not go or may decide to go to South America where I know it is warm in January and the ladies are also home loving and beautiful. Bye now, Your friend George
