bonjour, trying to get to istres by train from barcelona. since there doesn't seem to be an active istres forum, thought i'd ask here at nimes since it's the major city before istres. assuming i get to nimes from barcelona by train, is there a train that can take me straight to istres? if not, what's the nearest train station to istres that i should try to get to? other suggestions as to how to get there are most welcome. travel period is 2nd week of october. merci beaucoup!
Yes, there are trains but you will have to change at least once. Takes from 1h 12m, depending on train, costs 13.50 euro. voyages-sncf.com/billet-trai... will give you train times, details and fares. In French, but easy to work out. bahn.de/international/view/e... will give you train times and detials in English, but no fares.

Don't search for an October date.....it's too far ahead. Search for the same day of the week, but in the next few weeks. Fares and times are unlikely to change much, if at all.

You have picked a difficult route to obtain accurate information about ! Getting from Barcelona to Nimes will indeed mean an 8 hour plus journey with a change of train. And then reaching Istres is yet another conundrum. Presumably a bus runs this service? I see that you can take a regional train from Marseille to Istres that follows the coast via Martigues. That would be a nice journey one day ! But Marseille may be inconvenient for yourself. For your interest you can look at the regional train information for LANGUEDOC (across the border from Spain as far as Nimes etc) on: ter-sncf.com/languedoc/index... or for the region east of Languedoc, the regional trains are shown here : http://www.ter-sncf.com/paca/index.asp I think this route needs to be explored further !! It is not as simple as it looks, as you have discovered already. By the way, have you looked at the EUROLINES site in case this gives any alternative coach routes? http://www.eurolines.es
