Greetings from the USA, We have finalized one stop on our 2005 European Jaunt. We will be spending 9 days / 8 nights in Nice, France .... We arrive mid afternoon on Nov. 9th and depart early morning on Nov. 17th. We have our hotel confirmation and will be staying at: Comfort Hotel Boreal 9 rue Paul Deroulede Nice We have several questions: Anyone familiar with the hotel & location? They are saying: Opposite the "Nice-Etoile" shopping-center and only 5 minutes walk from the beach. 1. What reasonable transport is available to/from the airport. How long a ride? We arrive about 3 in the afternoon, but we have a 0630 flight on the 17th, so we need to get to the airport by 0530 at the latest for a flight to London Heathrow, then on to Schipol in Amsterdam. 2. What would be best method for a few day trips to Cannes - Monaco and San Remo, Italy. Train - Bus ?? Where can I find schedules? We would like to meet up with some fellow VTer's from the area for lunch or dinner one day. Also, if anyone could take a little time to show us around Nice one day, it would be appreciated very much. We would like to get away from the tourist area some nights, and eat out at a local restuarants which are not really visited by tourist. We found the food to be much more traditional, you get more, and alot less expensive than the tourist ones. If your interested in meeting up, email us at: al_mary@VTmail.com or suitcase@att.net Check out our homepage for VTer's we have met. Thanks for the help .... Al and Mary - Massachusetts / USA
Rent a car. If you are willing to drive stick shift, it is easier and cheaper. Nice bus transport is ok but not that great. Especially if you have to travel to Monaco, Italy etc...

See my Nice page for eating experience in La Trinite. I would recommend it for lunch, though, not dinner. The village really didn't seem to be a place to go for any other reason than that restaurant, although I only saw the main street. Maybe it was nice in other parts. Nice Restaurant Tips by ForestqueenNYC Regarding bus from airport to hotel: if your hotel has a website it might tell you the bus to take from the airport. The bus is definitely the cheapest way and if you are that close to the beach and don't have lots of luggage it is very doable. If they don't have a website then email them and ask. The train to your Riviera destinations will be expensive. The bus is much less so and probably runs a lot more frequently. I took it as far as Ventimiglia. Don't know about San Remo. My brother-in-law drove us there. He is an experienced Los Angeles driver. Drove us from Aix-en-Provence to San Remo. All was fine until we crossed the French Italian border. Wow! Big difference and my brother-in-law nearly lost it. Had this same experience when my friend from Marseille drove me to Italy. So if you rent a car to drive to Italy, prepare yourself for a lot of aggravation.

"0630 flight on the 17th, so we need to get to the airport by 0530!"..... Comming in the bus is fine - journey time 20 minutes. But moving on, forget the bus on 17th - decision made - the first airport bus kicks out of Nice at 08.00.Public bus even less likely. You really would do best to ask your hotel to organise you a very early taxi for 05.00 collection. At that time of morning you are expecting a lot to expect to pick up a cab just hanging around for a fare. Nice is not a 24/7 city - in the main people here want a nights sleep, including cab drivers. If you have any trouble the one place you can usually rely on finding a cab on spec is outside the Meridien Hotel 5-star hotel on the Promenade des Anglais - you guess why - or outside the main station Gare Nice Ville. Each is around ten minutes walk from your hotel. ButCannes Monaco and San Remo? In November probably train for for the first two. If there's a risk of rain you'll at least be waiting in the dry. San Remo's more complex. My preferred is train to Ventimiglia and frequent local bus on to San Remo, but there probably are a few through trains, or change at Ventimiglia for a Trenitalia service. There are lots of restaurants in Nice patronised by the Nicois - its not as simple as a tourist/ not tourist. However we don't eat out a lot but have a look at the restaurant tips of VT's Allaboutnice. Lisa knows her stuff. Cheers Andrew

Hello from MA! I had a similar trip as you a few years ago. My only receommendation would be to not spend too much time in Cannes, since to me its like a mini-Nice, and Travel to Antibes as well. I enjoyed Antibes as it is much smaller than Nice or Cannes and the restaurants serve all day for the Brits who frequent the place. On the eastern side of Nice, Villefranche sur-Mer has a fantastic beach and a nice village with a few great restaurants right on the harbor. I stayed there for 4 days during my trip and loved it.I had a car and didn't have any problem getting around. Also, scroll around here to see the area and location of your hotel in Nice: http://photos.pagesjaunes.fr/
