I am hoping to fly in to Toronto from Ireland and then on to New York. Can someone recommend an airline to use? and how long does it take?
If you are planning to stop over in Toronto, then I would recommend Porter Airline, which flies out of the small downtown airport in Toronto. Many airlines depart from Toronto Pearson to New York. Have a look at Westjet also.

wait...I just read your question again...are you flying from Niagara falls or from Toronto? If from Niagara, you can also check Buffalo/Niagara airport as internal flight is usually cheaper within the US.

Your question is a bit confusing. Are looking at flying Ireland to Toronto, getting to Niagara Falls and then flying to New York City? The trip to Niagara Falls from Toronto is about 90 minutes and can be done road or rail. Viewing the Falls is far better from the Canadian side. You could cross the border and head to the Buffalo Niagara airport, where you can catch a flight to one of the New York City area airports. Flight time would be about 90 minutes.

buffalo international airport is about a 45 minute drive from niagara. it is a fairly competitive route - i know that at least US Airways and JetBlue fly that route direct, about a one hour flight.

Sorry to tag onto someone else's question but I am seriously considering a similar trip. My plan is to fly into Toronto, hire a car (?) and drive to the falls. Then carry on to probably Buffalo or possibly into Pennsylvania before flying elsewhere in the US. Car hire between countries is obviously not possible or super expensive so what do we do? Can we bus/train from Toronto to Niagara then cross the border (with our bags?) and hire a car in the US?

Hi Amanda - you can most certainly take the bus or train to Niagara Falls. Via Rail and Greyhound both connect Toronto to Niagara Falls. The trip is 90+ minutes. I'm not quite sure what you would do with your luggage while visiting the Falls (if you are spending the night, leaving the bags at your hotel would be the obvious thing to do). The Rainbow Bridge which connects Canada and the USA is walking distance from the Falls, and does take foot traffic. You would clear US Customs and Immigration there. I expect that you could catch a taxi or other public transportation to get you to the Buffalo - Niagara Airport to catch a flight.

flying out of buffalo is the obvious choice. the nearest major airports to buffalo are cleveland ohio and pittsburgh ( anything out of erie international will just be a shuttle flight to another hub airport ). i don't know for sure but i cannot believe that you would not be able to find transportation across the bridge by bus or taxi.
