do I need to exchange American currency for Canadian currency before I visit.

    Most places just across the border accept American cash, but most (maybe all) will not give you change in it. You also won't get a very good exchange rate, but the money changers won't give you a great one either. You can't win with credit cards either, as they'll charge you a "foreign transaction fee" each time you use it.

    All Canadian merchants accept bank/ATM cards at point of sale. This will be your best option

    Most places accept the US $. Plus credit cards etc. And the exchange rate is just about 1:1 so you should have no issues.

    no but you should change it as soon as you arrive ...as I think it would save you n=money on the exchange rate.
