Traveling by car from Connecticut to Niagara Falls

My husband and I are driving from Connecticut to Niagara Falls. We are planning on staying on the Canadian side. We would like to stop over night about half way and need advice on where we might stop in New York State. Perhaps near a lake? If anyone has any advice we would appreciate it.
