Nearby deserts and mountains?

we are spending about a week in the newport area, jan20-28, and would like to go to a desert/mountain area. suggestions?

    Desert area, Palm Springs, mountain area, Big Bear. The best part is you don't have to make up your mind until you get to San Bernardino. Freeways will lead you to either location. Both are about 2 hours away, one if by mountain, one if by desert.
