JFK to Boston by bus - first time and with family

United States of America 46 minutes ago

      Hi VTers

We would arrive at JFK in the morning (8 am, Terminal 4) and plan to travel to Boston the same day by bus. We are 2 adults and 2 small kids with luggage. We have been to some countries together but this will be our first time to the US ā€“ 2+ weeks vacations starting from the 2nd week of December.

From some Internet search, it seems that first we have to make it to Manhattan from JFK to catch the bus to New England ā€“ although Iā€™d have preferred bypassing NYC which does not seem possible (?).

Please suggest how to do that as a first timer. Which ticket we should buy, how, and where? We would like to use public transport but may use the taxi if that is necessary. Just to mention, we plan to come back to NYC later.

For NYC-Boston, we intend to take the late afternoon (3-4 pm) bus connection so that we are not rushed. In the best case scenario it looks like that we could reach NYC around afternoon, and will have a few hours to roam/relax around. Would that be a good strategy? Can we leave our luggage at the bus station safely for a few hours (e.g. Megabus)?

We contemplated about staying one night in NYC before moving ahead to Boston but decided otherwise due to reasons.

Hi New Yorkers. I would be grateful for your help.
I will be arriving in New York on 21st December in the afternoon and leaving on the evening of the 28th.
I will require a single trip from Jamaica into Manhattan on the E train to get to my hotel and then I want an 7 day card that I will use from the 22nd until my departure on the 28th.
My question is, can I just take my single trip card and get it loaded at a booth for 7 days on the 22nd or is the 7 day card a different type? Many thanks. Roy.

I'm considering buying a vacation home in Tahoe City having visited several times over the past few years.

My concern is the price of property there is high and I'm worried if I wanted to sell in 5-10 years time would I at least get my money back.

If you live there yourself or have any information on this it would be greatly appreciated!

Hi. My wife and I fly out to New York on the 27th December and back to the UK on the 2nd January. We have our itinerary pretty well sorted but are struggling with what to do on NYE. We are staying on East 50th Street. My wife isn't a fan of fireworks so probably wouldn't enjoy Central Park and we do not want to spend a whole day standing in Times Square. We are young at heart mid 50's non-clubbing types and would like to go somewhere for a nice meal with possibly live music.Any suggestions would be very welcome. Thank you.

      Jamestown stay?????Please help!

by MartyAP Online Now Sep 22, 2007 at 5:43 AM

I was able to get a last minute trade into the Jamestown Overlook
for October 6-13. I know I have to cross the bridge to get into Newport. I believe it is Oktoberfest in Newport that week.

      1. How hard will it be to park in Newport day/evening?
Are there discounted rates available at the Visitor's Bureau
      2. Is there an easier way to get from Jamestown to Newport?
      3. Is there anything of interest in, restaurants?
      4. Can I buy tokens for the bridge?

We have stayed in timeshares available until December....the Overlook just popped up and I grabbed it.

Hi--we are going to visit Newport for one day next week and I have a couple of questions. Where do you recommend parking for the Cliff Walk? Are there places to picnic along the walk or is that discouraged? Are there any nearby sandwich places to get food for lunch along the walk? Can you recommend a good, moderately priced waterfront restaurant for dinner (we have 2 adults and 2 teens). Many thanks!!

    • Newport for Thanksgiving -- suggestions please

by sharbev Online Now Nov 8, 2006 at 9:22 PM family is thinking about spending Thanksgiving in Newport. We've never been and always enjoy checking out places "out of season". My husband and I are mid-late 30's and our 2 boys are 1 and 3. We'd also like to bring our small dog. We need suggestions for all the details.

We plan to arrive Wed and leave Sat.

Lodging: So far, considering Hotel Viking and Hyatt Regency. Are these good/wise choices? Differences between them? Others I should consider?
Dining: Main concern is Thanksgiving. We'd like something traditional, fun, etc. Should we travel out of Newport or is there someplace good in town? Other fun kid-friendly options for the rest of the trip?

Activity: We'd like a hotel with an indoor pool. I understand the outdoor Ice Skating Rink opens that weekend. Would be nice to see the Mansions or maybe just Astors Beechwood. Carriage rides available? Also would consider visiting a tree farm...I know some in New England will ship, but that may be more in VT, NH, etc. Suggestions for things to do with the kids?

Babysitting: Any hotels/services that provide good child care for an evening out?

Okay, please feel free to add anything you feel would be helpful. Forgive my naivete, as I mentioned, we've not been before.

Also, we are considering (to avoid holiday traffic a bit) breaking the trip up and staying in the Darien/Bridgeport/Stamford area on Tues night before arrival and Saturday night on the way home. Any recommendations for affordable hotels?
