Travel Polynesia by sea

Hi, I'm in n.island nz at the mo and have just got this crazy idea of travelling to Fiji and beyond by boat (small boat). I got the idea from a travel buddy who was lucky enough to find someone who took him for free from Bali to cairns in a team of 3.he said it took them a month. If anyone has done anything like this then pls pls give us some advice on how to go about it.as it stands I'm soon gonna head to Auckland and hang about the marina for a bit in hope that someone can guide me.its cyclone season til may so ive some time to get it together but not much! Could be quite an adventure! Thanks

This is a vaster and much less populated region than that between Bali and Cairns. Incidentally, Fiji is Melanesian, not Polynesian.
