Lindis Pass

by MalH Online Now May 31, 2012 at 12:16 PM

We have now arranged our itinerary for next January. We propose staying 2 nights in Twizel to see Mt Cook (in cloud last time we visited)- i.e. two chances to see it! The next day we are due to fly out of Queenstown at 2pm. Is there any reason to be concerned about driving from Twizel to Queenstown within a morning in January, e.g. is the Lindis pass difficult or prone to flooding in wet weather?

In January I do not see any risk. I have never heard of flooding in the Lindis Pass area. There is not a lot of rain anyway. I would surely risk to drive there on the day of your flight. The Ahuriri river valley is so huge and wide that it would probably take days and days of endless rain until it would affect the roads. And as said, I have never heard of anything like it. Some years ago there was flooding in/around Twizel (Twizel river) but the highway was still clear - and this was in May and August, not in summer.
