The shortest route from Dunedin to Frank Josef Glazier

We had been to Dunedin and Queenstown before, next year we would like to go to Frank Josef Glazier from Dunedin. Looking at the map there are few routes that can be taken. As we had limited time, we really appreciate if someone can tell us, the fastest route that we take take to the west coast from our base in Dunedin. Is using highway 85 passing thru Palmerston (north of Dunedin) then going west to Ranfurly - Clyde - Cromwell - Wanaka - Haast is the best ? Or shall we go south from Dunedin - Mosgiel - Milton - Roxburgh - Cromwell - Wanaka - Haast ? From the map, the northern route look the shortest, but sometime the shortest may not be the fastest.
