Haha, I see the selection of this kind of music I sent you was indeed not great :-) I have a CD called "An Hour of Maori Favourites". Apart from Pokarekare Ana you find other favourites on it like Hoki Mai, He Wawaia/Po Atarau, Poi E, etc. More titles are: Waikaremoana, E Toru Matou, Te Rangipi Tenei, E Pari Ra, Whakaria Mai, Maranga Mai. Just listen into those songs and decide what and if you like them. If you look for CD's you can also search those album titles: Maori Love Songs Maori Action Songs Aotearoa - The Maoris of New Zealand (The word Maoris with s at the end does not exist though...) Pokarekare Ana - Favourite Maori Songs

Hayley Westenra, maybe? Especially her first CD, "Pure", which also has a few Maori songs. A very young singer - she was 17 when she recorded it - with a natural soprano voice as pure as clear water.

This is perhaps because non-Maori time has only started less than 200 years ago, and at the start most people came from England. So no really old NZ folk music exists, just some country music which I do not consider as traditional folk music. Such country music is from The Warratahs: http://www.warratahs.co.nz/ Mama still thinks Dave Dobbyn is the Greatest ;-))) I asked our Kiwi Papa, he considers Maori music our folk music.

    New Zealand traditional music

Neil Finn is a great songster, along with those already mentioned. ANd for humour, the music of "Flight of the Conchords" is a favourite of mine. Very very kiwiana :-) For the greatest ever kiwi folk song I'd have to say any kiwi recordings of "Ten Guitars" - not a kiwi written song but certainly a kiwi embraced song. John Rowles is a Maori singer who has always taken his Kiwi heritage to the world. I love his deep voice.

I suggest finding a copy of the New Zealand national anthem. It's often sung in equal parts English and Maori, and although the English version is very boring the Maori version sounds quite interesting. Alternately, you could try using the music of a kiwi singer like Bic Runga as your background music. Good luck! :)
