want to explore NZ but do not know when the best time of the year to travel. i don't like it too hot but would like to travel in light clothing. can anyone recommend the best month?
I would opt for February/March when school holidays are finished. It is 'never' really too hot in New Zealand.

We have lost our hot months in NZ! Today, New Year's Day, mid-summer, we have 12 deg. in Christchurch, and there might be colder places on the South Island - at least it is 12 deg. plus... ;-) In the past two years the decembers have been very unstable, so I would always opt for January to April. And right, best after the school holidays which last until the end of January. But never, never come without warm clothes, at least take an anorak with you. We can have four seasons in a day, and our 12 deg. today should be a warning... ;-)

Very good, March could become nice. The meteorologists have just issued a statement that summer will start in February this year... ;-)
