North Island Weather

by petert51 Online Now Mar 17, 2013 at 6:42 PM

We will be touring the North Island in early to mid May this year and would like to know what the weather is likely to be like. We are from Melbourne. We are only planning 9 days but could add a few more days if necessary. Our itinerary at the moment is Auckland - Coromandel - Bay of Plenty & White Island - Napier - Rotarou. Would we have time to visit the volcanoes in the national park just south of Lake Taupo.

Thanks
Peter

Hi The weather in May can be wet not always that cold, it gets cold in June but seeing you are from Melbourne it wont be any colder than there for that time of year. The area's you are going will be a lot warmer than most of the country.. I live by the volcano's you wish to visit south of Taupo, there is the Tongariro crossing but if you want to walk it that time of the year there maybe snow on it and you will need to go guided and the cost for that is around $150 per person, but if there is no snow you wont need a guide just the right clothing. If you want to know more just let me know!

Reality is that May is absolutely unpredictable and you need to at least have a really good wind and water proof jacket. Layers are good. It can be really windy and cold. It might be mild and nice. But it sure is a changeable time of year. This year being very different to most so far.
Glad to read you are going to Coromandel Peninsula, it's an amazing place.
