Travel from JFK to downtown NY

by bzulu67 Online Now Feb 5, 2013 at 2:23 PM

Hi all
What is the cheapest way to travel from JFK to downtown NY.
Are most of the hotels accessible by public transport from JFK.
One hotel I'm considering is Econo Lodge in Times Square.
Many thanks,
Keith

I guess taking airtrain till Jamaica St. then MTA train C line till 42nd St.
    then a little walk.
if you intend to use NYC's transport and you'd stay few day, better you buy at Jamaica station a ticket called.... I don't remember now, I check and I'll come back if anyone else would tell you first.

"Cheapest" is certainly the subway. It will take some time however as it's not direct and it's not fast. Bus would be my second choice. It's faster than the subway but slower than a cab. There's also shared shuttle service nyairportservice.com/page.ph... that works well too.

    found, it's MetroCard 7-Day Unlimited Cost:29, reduced fare14.50
I found it very good for unlimited subway and local bus rides until midnight, 7 days from day of first use.

not sure that i agree, particularly if your arrival is during the rush hour period. would take the air train to jamaica and then take the e train to times square, runs down eighth avenue. if your hotel is closer to midtown, you can change at continental avenue in queens for the f train down sixth avenue which runs on the same track ( or it used to, these things change periodically, but certainly on the same platform ). more or less an hour.

I did both and by far, taking the Airport shuttle was the easist. Put the bags on board and gone. The other way, you take the JFK train to platform, after platform, lug the bags up and down stairs, if you are in rush hour, the commuters really love the space you hold up on the trains, not to mention you have to carry the stuff up the stairs while other people are in front and back of you. Spend the extra money and you save your sanity.

I would be arriving at JFK on a Sunday in August at 1955, although this time could change nearer the departure time.
How long does it take on the airport shuttle and do they run at regular intervals. Does it drop you near Times Square?

Airtrain and subway to midtown is good. I notice other responses haven't said much about the merits of Time Sq as an area to stay in. I would avoid it if possible - noisy, tacky and touristy. It is one of the least appealing bits of Manhattan. I would advise looking at other areas even if a few subway stops from the main attractions. I like Turtle Bay in Mid Town East but plenty of other locations might be equally convenient.

Could I just ask some locals about the cost of a cab from JFK to midtown? I think this would give some comparison point for the comments about airtrain/subway and buses. I'm coming to NY in September and I'm only seriously considering a yellow cab since there's two of us and some suitcases. I'd guessed at about50-$60?

I've not been back in a while but that was the price range. It is or was fixed price (plus tip and toll).
