I need to get from Midtown to a hotel (not sure which one yet) in the Huntington/Commack vicinity on a Friday and will return to Laguardia on Sunday. Had planned to rent a car midtown and drive to the island, but wonder about the feasibility of taking the LIRR out of the city and renting a car somewhere en route or at the destination. Not sure if there are any car rental facilities adjacent to LIRR stations anywhere. Will have a teen and luggage with me. Ideas?
I don't know about car rental facilities adjacent to LIRR stations, but what about renting from LaGuardia if that is where you will end up on Sunday? You could take the LIRR to Woodside and then get a taxi from there to LaGuardia to pick up your car. There is an Enterprise location close to the airport: 83-34 23rd Avenue East Elmhurst, NY 11370 (718) 457-2900. I have not used this location, but every other Enterprise location I've used will pick you up and drop you off at no charge. So when you drop off your car Sunday, they could drive you to the airport... I would double check though to be sure if you rent from them. I'm not sure if other rental car companies have the pickup service.

lirr runs frequent train service to huntington. there are two enterprise locations in huntington and most enterprise locations will pick you up and drop you off. there are also taxi stations right at the train station.

I am not sure why you are going to Huntington (perhaps visit family) but if that is so, I would suggest that you take the LIRR to Huntington, rent a car there via Enterprise(they can pick you up at the place you are staying at), then take the LIRR back to the Woodside station in Queens on the way to LGA and take a cab from the station to LGA or just drive back to LGA and return the car at an Enterprise rental spot near LGA. With a teen you should have no issue with luggage since they can help you mange it.
