JFK to Midtown on the airtrain/subway

by samtin Online Now Apr 11, 2012 at 4:46 AM

I am arriving at JFK in the mid evening and travelling alone (female). I am unsure whether to book a transfer to midtown with NYAS - - I used them once before a few years ago and they were fine but reviews online recently are mixed - or use the airtrain and subway. My questions are: Is this line on the subway safe if I am travelling alone after 9pm and how long would the journey take all -in from JFK Terminal 2 to 53rd/Lex or thereabouts? Price? Many thanks, Sam

The trip is safe. Depending on your timing the air train can take under 20 minutes to Jamaica station, then the E subway train to Lexington ave and 53rd can take 40 minutes or so if not less. This is the fastest way to get there. Any car transport will take longer and of course cost much more.

Depends on how much luggage you're lugging up staircases. At 9pm things are safe enough, but Jamaica is a slum, you know. May I suggest, for a few bucks more, taking the Long Island Railroad from Jamaica to Penn Station? That leaves you at 7th Ave and 33 St, of course, on the west side. I think you can take the "E" train (uptown or Queens bound) from there, to Lex/53 St, as it runs on the same tracks as the F. But the LIRR is a really safe ride, with few stops along the way.

The subway is as safe as the LIRR. Probably safer and the trip means no changes of trains, plus the cost is minimal compared to the RR. lso there are escalators availble to get into the subway. Plus no lugging baggage through a busy Penn Station later where the subway has no escalators.

By the way Jamaica is not a slum. That is not good advice to give to anyone.

I would not bother with rail at all, and just take the Airport Service bus. If one thinks Jamaica is a safe, secure, visually pleasing neighborhood, then one should get out more. I've lived in NYC all my life, in each of the outer boroughs, and I stand by my statement.

As said before the train (subway or LItR) are safe. If the OP has hesitations about any other method of transport then so be it, and I still suggest the train method for speed, safety and cost. As for the area, since the OP does not spend time in Jamaica other then to board the trains the area no matter what anyone says is totally of no importance in this case.
