Be prepared for sticker shock. Mid September is extremely expensive and bargains are hard to find then. The United Nations General Assembly is around then, as is Fashion Week. And the weather is typically beautiful. If it's at all possible for you to switch dates, try and come a couple of weeks earlier. In any case, if you give an approximate budget in dollars, I'll be happy to look around for you. Also, do you need one or two beds?

The word "cheap" and "New York" really don't go together in the same sentence.

I would suggest that you take a look at expedia.com and maybe hotels.com and priceline.com. Get some ideas as to what prices they have, find some hotels on their web sites that might interest you and then go directly to the hotel web sites to check their prices. If you find the hotel web sites prices are pretty much the same book directly with the hotel, going through a 3rd party like Priceline or hotels.com etc is ok, but if you can cut out the middle man, and work directly with the hotel, then if somethng should go wrong you only have to deal with the hotel directly. Lots of these on line travels sites unfortunately won't work with you when there is a problem. And IMHO300.00 is not cheap, that's a pretty good chunk of change. Good luck

You shouldn't have any trouble getting a nice hotel in that range (or below).

$300 per night is a decent enough budget for a mid range room, just make sure that you have accounted for all the taxes that go on top of New York hotel rooms, they can be hefty and it's not always clear what the total per night is. Personally I'd focus on the area you want to stay in first and then see what's around. USA hotel rooms tend to be larger and better equipped than in the UK so as long as the reviews are ok you should be able to get something decent. I always check reviews on tripadvisor.com before I book anything. Feel free to drop me an email if you want any more help. Karen

Staying in Brooklyn is always a great and less-costly alternative to staying in the City. You're still only minutes from Manhattan and will have plenty of options in public transportation. By far my favorite Brooklyn hotel is Hotel Le Bleu. Le Bleu is very modern, clean and the staff are incredibly helpful/friendly. I 100% recommend Le Bleu. Best of luck on your travels! http://www.hotellebleu.com

Le Bleu is cool......however...a little out of the way on 4th ave in Bklyn IMO(subway wise..meaning only 1 line really connects to that area.) I prefer the Nu Hotel on Smith Street. GREAT location steps from the Subway(A,C,F) and 2 stops from the city! Smith Street/Court Street is a great location for restaurants and bars. You can walk across the Bklyn Bridge from that location. They are also opening up an outdoor cafe/bar within the next few weeks: http://www.nuhotelbrooklyn.com/
