Line on footpath

by johnfromoz Online Now Jun 12, 2011 at 6:02 PM

Trying to find out details of the exact location of a line on the footpath that denotes the original shoreline of Manhattan Island in the 17 century before reclamation works took place. I believe it is behind the Andaz hotel on Wall Street. Any help appreciated, thanks in advance.

Cool youre interested in it at all. I'm a big buff for this type of old Manhattan stuff and I'd lived in (true) downtown for years but I've never even heard of this line. The general shoreline of old Manhattan is "Water Street" on the East side; and somewhere between Greenwich and Trinity on the West side (where it was more mucky). There are some maps available from 17c Dutch and British NY, with some of the basic streets of today on there.. Pearl (was "main street", kind of the quai or strand), wall which was a ditch then a wall), broad (which was the main canal for boats loading and unloading goods), marketfield and bowling green (where the market for the goods broad in and out was held), even maiden lane (a small creek north of the original wall).. Hope to hear more news on this.

I was curious so popped in on this thread. I don't have any positive information to share. But if you are into the old history of the area, have either of you read "The Big Oyster: History on the Half Shell"? I read it and found its historical slant on NY to be quite unique.

Hi John, I don't know about a path precisely behind the Andaz on Wall Street but you may be interested in the Greenway Walk and Bike Path which starts 'round the Battery (South) and goes all the way past the Cloisters, Washington Heights. I think it continues over to the East River side. Check out the links below. and the High Line in Manhattan's West Side. It starts in Meatpacking District and goes to West 34th St (between 10 and 11th Avenues.) thehighline.org/about/park-i... nyc.gov/html/edc/pdf/greenwa...
