San Gennaro Little Italy

by Nicola_Sydney Online Now May 28, 2005 at 7:11 PM

Hello I was checking out Little Italy and came across a festival called San Gennaro which will be occuring when we're in NYC. I'm just wondering if anyone has been to this & can offer any reccomendations. Also, how far is the Brooklyn Bridge from Madison Sq GArden (our hotel is near there) and is cab the best way to get there? Thanks in advance.

The best way to get from Madison Square Garden to Brooklyn Bridge would be by subway. You can take the R or N (downtown) and get off at City Hall. From there you can walk to the Bridge and I would recommend to cross the bridge walking. You will have a very nice view of the skyline. It is pretty at night as well. As per the San Gennaro festival, I have never been there and I am sorry I can't give you any input. I hope you enjoy your stay in NYC!

N & R is good advice -- if you are at Madison Square you are at 8th Avenue -- the N & R run on 6th Avenue so short walk...

about San Gennaro.. the origin of this celebration is Napolitan.. the legend says that every year in naples Saint Gennaro offers people some kind of miracle.. the miracles consists in looking dry blood becoming fluid again on this occasion.. well, i am not religious , but anyways, i've been to san gennaro celebration in new york a few times and it's interesting. there will be parades, food and so on.. remember it's gonna be completely different from what it really is like in Naples.. but it'll be fun. I'd go if i were u ciaoo

I went to the San Gennaro festival several years ago - basically from a casual visitor's perspective, it was a street lined with mostly food booths. Nice festive atmosphere, good food everywhere, LOTS of people - it takes a while to walk down the street b/c it's just wall to wall jammed with people.
