My boyfriend and I, and another couple are driving down from Minnesota for a long weekend in the French Quarter in a few weeks. We will be staying off of Dauphine and Pauger and I'm very worried about our walks to/from our lodging each night. It doesn't seem far away from the Quarter from what I can tell by Google Maps and other research I've done, but it looks a little scary. Especially for four tourists that are under the influence. I've been there at least a dozen times but have always drove in from Slidell and parked near Canal St. I've enjoyed my visits there and have never encountered anything bad, ever. Everyone I've met there, and everyone in general were very pleasant, but I've never strayed outside the Quarter. I would love to hear any advice anyone can give me to stay safe and not be a target, aside from the norm (be aware of your surroundings, stay where there are a lot of people, etc), we obviously can't have a group of people walk us home...although, I might consider asking someone :o) Looking for safe routes, etc... Thank you ~ J
Hmmmn, I haven't spent much time on that end of the Quarter...yeah, if you consider Esplanade Avenue as the edge of the Quarter, you are literally just a block beyond it. Most people would just walk it, but late at night, if you are over near Canal Street, I don't think anyone would think it odd if two or four of you took a taxi back to your place...there are more taxis over by Canal anyway. Last time we were there, we stayed in the warehouse-like district near the National WWII Museum (worth a visit), and while I drove (we had about 8 of our family there), I saw plenty of taxis...yeah, you could walk, but late at night under the influence, let someone take you home if it makes you feel more comfortable... Great idea! I just stored the names and numbers of six taxi companies in my phone, just in case. I'm pretty sure we wouldn't have a problem finding one on the street either. Thanks! Happy Travels! ~J

I stayed at a B&B right near Dauphine and Pauger some time ago the weekend before MG. While the streets were quite crowded in the Quarter, by the time we got to Esplanade there were not many people about. We walked back and forth for 3 days and sometimes very late at night without incident.

Dauphin/Pauger is the Marigny. Pre-2005, I think you would have something to worry about, but the area has gentrified quite a bit and has become very popular for (wealthy) residents and a quieter-but-still-close-to-the-Quarter alternative for tourists. If you go two blocks east to Frenchmen Street, you'll find a bustling lane lined with live music venues, almost all of which are 7 day per week operations. If you go north of Saint Claude/Rampart, that's the bad area. But you have no reason to go up there. Taxis would be a good option if you're more on the Canal Street side. Not because of the safety really, but because New Orleans in August is unbelievably hot, and traversing the Quarter, even at night, is no fun. Pedi-cabs are also readily available. However, when we were there a couple of weeks ago, my wife took one back, then took a vehicle taxi the next night and found that the vehicle was actually cheaper.
