I believe it is a highly restricted military base and it is completely off limits to visitors.

There are ways to reach the outer gates but there's very little to see there. If you Google "area 51 gate" you'll find several videos on YouTube where people have gone up to the gates to look around. It's very restricted though because of the amount of popular fanfare and there is no way to visit the site without having a certain US military clearance. If you look on a map of Nevada, you'll find it by looking for Groom Lake. Area 51 is also, by all accounts, no longer used for its previous testing purposes. Supposedly that's all been moved to Edwards Air Force Base in California.

You can get a view of the fence and a lot of desert from Highway 95 if you drive northwest out of Las Vegas. As others have indicated the Air Base and Test Range is highly restricted and "the public" is not allowed anywhere close to see what's going on. Any of the "tours" that advertise taking you to Area 51 will only drive on the highways. To get "very close" check out Indian Springs, NV. bing.com/images/search?q=Are...

There are no guided tours etc. to and around Area 51. It is a highly restricted place. I think the best people do is see a fence and plenty of desert! - Not very interesting. Hayley :)
