Air conditioning in September

by redhead415 Online Now Jul 17, 2012 at 2:26 PM

My husband and I will be in Amsterdam September 11 through September 19. We have noticed that most hotels in Amsterdam do not offer air conditioning and the ones that do are quite expensive. Will we need air conditioning in Amsterdam in September? Are there a lot of mosquitoes in Amsterdam at that time of the year? I would hate to leave the hotel windows open and have a roomful of bugs. Also, will we have to use DEET in our travels through the Netherlands. Thanks

Every year can be different but we spent a week in Amsterdam in 2010 and NEVER needed air: in fact, we wore jackets on a good many days. I also didn't notice any mosquitoes at all - even if it was nice enough to have our balcony doors open for part of the evening.

Although September can be sunny and warm (to US, possibly not to you), it is AUTUMN! Why would you need air-conditioning? If most hotels don't offer it, doesn't this tell you something? None of them could do without heating but it's perfectly possible to do without air-conditioning because it rarely gets hot enough for long enough for it to be of use! Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water. In Amsterdam they even wash out the canal system, by sluicing fresh (or at least moving) water through it at night. Not that I would want to swim/fall in a canal, all the same, but really I don't think you need to prepare as for a safari.

By september the weather in Europe will be lovely, it should be mild warm days and cooler nights. This is my favorite time to travel there, I would take a jacket too as it can be cool on some days. As always the weather is unpredictable, I once went in October and had to buy t-shirts as it was really warm, the next visit it was absolutely freezing by beginning of october. insects shouldn,t be a problem, houses there don,t have fly screens as they don,t need them, I always sleep with a window open.

I have been bitten so much whenever I go to the Netherlands at different times of the year so if you're prone to bites, sure, bring your DEET along. You can buy it there if you want to pack lightly and see how it goes.

    >mosquitos? never notice either LOL Gwened - I was positively eaten alive by the buggers in Florence last May. Left the window open and woke up covered in huge welts.

September can be extreme (weather wise): it can be really nice & hot, but it also can be cold and wet. You won't need DEET, but if you don't want to be full of musquito bites you should bring it with you.

Yep - I saw them (and gnats) flying all over the room. And the hotel staff confirmed that they a lot of them in the foliage outside.

I have been told by a Pharmacist that the reason tourists react to mosquito bites with such large welts is because we have a type of allergy to them whereas the locals are used to the certain type of mosquito.

Have a look at this websites with the weather averages of the last 20 years. You are facing outdoor temperatures of 15 deg C or 59 deg F. In stead of an airco you might need the central heating at times. With resprect to mosquitoes. As mentioned in ealier reponses there are no musquitoes, but any bug can enter if you leave a window open. But with lower outdoor temperatures there will be almost no small flies. I suspect you might face an occasional spider looking shelter for the rain. PJ

Airco is not a usual thing in our country, so it is not a standard thing in hotels and other accommodation. And almost non-existant in private homes. That's because it's not needed! You can get some insect repellent for the occasional bug. But it's hardly common in September. Enjoy your stay!
