Jah B's Cottages

by Muppie Online Now Jan 11, 2012 at 11:03 AM

We will be spending 3 weeks at Jah B's Cottages, arriving Jan 25 2012, from Winnipeg (its freezing here!). We are early sixty-somethings anticipating a get-down local experience, but want to go prepared as much as we can. Does anyone have anything to suggest about (1) electrical adaptors for hairdryers (should I even bring one or is this a waste of time?) (2) any problem plugging in a cell phone? (3)is it better to buy bug lotion and laundry soap, etc. down there, or should we bring it with us? (concerned about travelling "heavy") (4) is Jah B's on the cliff? Hard to find a picture of it from a distance. Looks fabulous though...love the idea of the dogs living under the cottages! Thanks for any replies, One Love Mon...

Yes, mon. Have not stayed at Jah-Bs but know about it a little. Pretty spartan cottages across the road from the beach, which at times can be a little hot during no wind times. I usually bring my own bug spray, just to make sure I have my favorite brand, but almost everything can be had at the local grocery store near the roundabout. I actually prefer staying on the cliffs, with a lot more privacy, but there is something to be said about the beach cottage experience. I have been going to Negril for over 30 years from Georgia and have gradually graduated to needing air conditioning and an ocean view for my cottage choice (see seagrapevillas.com for an example) Negril is a wonderful place---hope you have a great trip----if you need any other help, like someone to pick you up at Mobay airport for the trip to Negril, let me know!

Hey Dustmon, thank you so very much for your helpful reply! We actually had no idea where this accommodation is, we chose this spot because of price. We are fine with spartan, we are not a prince and princess! All we want is clean, easy accessibility to shopping and the beach, and not to stay right on the beach per se. Someone from Jah B's will be picking us up at the airport (sixty bucks US) which is a tad high, but at least they know where they are going. Good to know about being able to buy bug spray etc. locally. We have been advised to bring very little cash, but to use a debit card to get cash daily. Is this what you do? (especially important, since we are not going to be in a secure resort environment). Thanks again!

Outlets are the same as in Canada so no adaptors are needed. Remember anything in Jamaica is far more expensive in the stores then Canada. So keep this in mind on what you pack or don't pack. Most important is the suntan lotion since it does get mighty hot and easy to burn.

Don't go! Friends stayed there last year February there were 6 of in 4 cabins. All of them got bed bugs bites bad and had to leave all their clothes and suitcases behind. Infested dogs barking too.

$60 for the trip from Mobay sounds good---there are 2 ATMs in town near the roundabout--one for Jam$ and one for US---I like to have a little J$ for places like the fish market (in the curve where the beach ends right at the roundabout back under the trees) and other smaller shacks along the road although just about everyone will take US$--- definitely check out the cliff area during your trip and see if you dont like it better!

I had the most incredible vacation, and stayed at Jah B's. It is not for everyone, but it certainly was for us. My travel partner was bitten, but not by bed bugs. Some people are very allergic to the mosquitoes (they are not like the ones we have in Canada) or some other insect. We checked for bed bugs and there were none. Other things may not sit well with those wanting to stay there, such as the very "basic" accommodation, sometimes the lack of water (when the ladies are washing clothes outside by hand) and the chickens and roosters running all over the place. The dogs are friendly, and they are NOT infested with anything. If you are looking for a "roots" place to stay, you will love it there.
