Hi there im staying at Couples Negril in December for 7 nights with my fiance. As we are only there for a short time we'd love to know whats not to be missed, whats the best excursions to do, places to eat or go for a drink because we'd love to fit as much as we can into the one trip. Kind regards, Stacey x
It looks like you're inhaling that drink through your nose!

Ricks Cafe is a must. Can you only get drinks there or do they do do snacks and things? Id also like to go to Margaritaville, do they charge to get in? And what are drink prices like? Do places in Negril prefer US Dollars or JA Dollars? Thank you, Stacey xxx

Much more than snacks at Rick's, bring the US dollars and plenty of 'em for Rick's. There's no cost to get into Margaritaville, Negril there's even a Margaritaville at the MO Bay airport. frommers.com/destinations/ne... for what to expect at Rick's it's not what it used to be. but what is?

For day trips you can go to YS Falls, Mayfield Falls, Roaring River or Abeokuta. All withing one hour drive from Negril. The is live music on the beach everywhere at night. Ask any taxi driver. After the Live music, there is a place called MiYard {www.miyard.com} about a mile into the West End that is open 24/7 with music, drinks and dancing until the sun comes up. Again ask ant taxi driver. Drop by MiYard anytime, I live in one of the apt. there! Cheers and Irie!

Stacey... I would suggest that y'all pal up with another couple, so that the cost of a cab could be split. Be sure to look for the red JUTA license plate on the cab ... otherwise, it's not an authorized taxi. Negotiate the rate, based on an afternoon of exploring ... tell the driver exactly where y'all want to go and how long you expect to be at each place. That way, the driver can drop y'all and keep working until time to pick y'all back up to go to the next place. Below are some things to do in Negril and I suggest that these are fun and easy to include in a week's stay. I always recommend a visit to the large "straw market" near downtown ... I make it a game to see if I can walk around for thirty minutes and leave without having bought anything. Course, I've been to the Caribbean more than 65 times, so there really is little I need to buy in the way of souvenirs. Next in line is the Sunshine Mall, with the Hi-Lo Supermarket. Most folks find it interesting to visit a food market in a third world country and the Hi-Lo is one of the better to see how other people shop for food. Nina rarely shops when we're in the Caribbean ... less even than I do. There used to not be really all that many shops ... probably Sunshine Mall would have a good number of "general" shops in Negril. For jewelry, try the Times Square Shopping Center (it's north of the town center and would be first stop, before the straw market). Your best "buy" would in Negril be Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee. It's the world's best (and most expensive) coffee! Fully 90 % of the crop is bought up by the Japanese each year, which drives the price sky high. You can buy it in bags at the Hi-Lo supermarket. However, we've found that there is a shop that's also located in Sunshine Mall that usually has better prices that the Hi-Lo Supermarket. I don't remember the name of the shop, but if you walk through the arch (from the parking lot on the back) and turn to the right, go along the "front" of the mall area to either the next to last or third from last shop on the end of that side. If you're planning on getting only a few bags, you may have to take the posted price, but if you're planning to buy in any quantity to take home, the price is negotiable. Just make sure that it's really the real stuff .. there are numerous imitations sold as Blue Mountain coffee that ain't! Other than that, most shops in the straw market have the same things that every other shop has. Not really anything that sticks out as being a really good buy. Oh, and you can buy Cuban cigars, but if you do, make sure they are smoked in Jamaica ... it's against the law to bring 'em back into the US Then, it's on out the West End Road to the Negril South Point Lighthouse. This lighthouse is just over 100 years old, stands 100 feet above the water below the cliff and you can get a full tour of the facility, including climbing the stairs up to the tip top and going out on the catwalk around the light itself. The view is great ... the lighthouse is the tallest man made structure on the eastern end of the island. Finally, I always try to go to Rick's Cafe for sunset. Playboy magazine once printed that "the view of sunset from Rick's Cafe in Negril is the most beautiful in the world!" Just don't buy a meal there ... it's pricey! There is one other side trip I enjoyed ... a drive over to YS Falls ... which I think is more beautiful that the more known Dunn's River falls. But YS Falls is a long drive from Negril ... it would be a day trip. And, to get a cab to take you would be expensive, to say the least. Another possibility, noted by somebody else, is Mayfield Falls ... it's nearer to Negril and though I haven't been there myself, I've heard it's a nice thing to experience. But, see what the going rate is before getting in the cab. Much love -- and maximum respect! Jamaica Jim
