Ferry options from Salerno to Positano

      Campania Jun 25, 2014 at 6:20 PM

Hello everyone. I'm going to be arriving in Salerno via cruise ship (Royal Caribbean - Serenade of the Seas) on 4 September. My plan is to take a ferry, first thing in the morning, from Salerno to Positano.  (And then after spending some time in Positano, take the SITA bus to Amalfi, and then finally a ferry from Amalfi back to Salerno.)  I would like to get to Positano as early in the morning as possible to maximize my sightseeing time.  I expect to be able to disembark from the cruise ship at 7 in the morning or shortly thereafter.

From what I've read online, there are a several options for the ferry from Salerno to Positano:

      1. Travelmar/Cooperativa Sant'Andrea (I believe these are the same thing), and this ferry departs regularly from the pier nearest Piazza della Concordia, but the earliest departure is 8:40 in the morning. I've read that a shuttle bus is available from the cruise ship to Piazza della Concordia.  This trip is advertised as 70 minutes.
      2. Alicost, which departs from the Molo Manfredi pier only at 8:40 in the morning (I wonder if this is a commuter ferry?)  I don't know how long this trip takes.
      3. NLG, which also departs from the Molo Manfredi pier only only at 8:20 in the morning, and is apparently a high speed ferry that takes 50 minutes.

Here are my questions that I hope can be answered:

      1. Is Molo Manfredi easier to get to than taking a shuttle bus from the ship to Piazza della Concordia?  I don't know exactly where the cruise ship will dock, and from what I've read online, the Salerno port is quite large.
      2. I'd like to be able to enjoy the ferry trip, and hopefully enjoy the view of the coast from the ferry.  It looks like the Travelmar/Cooperativa Sant'Andrea ferries allow for enjoying the view with outside seating.  Does the NLG ferry also have outside seating?  Is it an unpleasant journey because it is high-speed?  I'd love to take a few good photos of arriving in Positano.  It looks like a stunning view from the pictures I've seen online.  I can't wait to visit! smiley

Many thanks in advance for any insight and guidance that you can provide!  Ciao!

      Transportation from Praiano to Florence

Having been helped so much getting from Rome to Praiano by bus (thanks so much!), we now will need to get from Praiano to Florence next Monday by 5 p.m. Are there any buses that could do the trick? We hesitate to take trains b/c we have 4 pieces of luggage (2 large, 2 small) and are concerned about getting them on and storing them on the train. I guess we will if there is no option, but you guys are so knowledgeable, I'm hoping someone knows a way by bus.

      Thanks, Judi

Me and my friend are going to the Naples in August. We ordered only a flight (4 nights). we didn't order the hotel yet, we want to see most of the places (Pompeii and Herculaneum, Vesuvius, sorrento and the amalfi coast - maybe positano?)
we don't want to pay a lot, so I was thinking maybe it's better to stay in the naples, there are cheap hotels near the train station. will it be safe to stay there? we are 2 guys (30 years old but not so big by look). and will it be good to take the train each day to see everything? first day Pompeii and Herculaneum, second vesuvius and the third sorrento and positano? I understand the trains and buses doesn't cost a lot. our goal is to see beautiful views, little history and enjoy the atmosphere. thanks for any information!

Although I have undertaken this journey several times before I am confused by which station is best to use (from the port) to Herculaneum.

I thought I had used Centrale, as it was nearer, less crowded and one could be sure of a seat but looking at the map, now I am not sure.

Could anyone please advise which station would be best?

Naples to Lipari in 14 days

by MuratU Online Now Aug 22, 2013 at 3:55 AM

      Hi there,

I'm planning to visit South of Italy next week. Overall I've got two weeks so I'd like to fly to Naples and eventually make my way down to Lipari. I thought I could base myself there and do some island hopping before returning to Naples to catch my flight back home.
From other threads, I understand that people would like to spend a couple of days in Naples, (perhaps visit Ischia and Procida ) stay 1-2 nights each in Tropea and Maratea to see the beautiful beaches, maybe 2 nights in Taormina before taking the hydrofoil to Lipari from Milazzo. It would be a tremendous help if you could help me out with my itinerary. How many days/nights do you think I should spend in each town and from Lipari what would be best alternatives for daily trips to other islands?

I've also got another option where I could take the overnight ferry from Corfu to Bari. Take the train from Bari to see Matera and probably stay overnight before heading to Salerno, Naples and eventually make my way down to Lipari?

Would I be better off renting a car from Naples or would you advise bus and train for the whole trip?

      Grazie mille

      Naples Neighbourhood

by Karlie85 Online Now Apr 4, 2013 at 10:58 AM

      Hi everyone.

My husband and I will be in Naples for four nights in September. I feel like I need some advice on which would be the best neighbourhood(s) for us to stay in. We're in our late 20s and have traveled extensively in Italy and Europe, but never been to Naples. I'm not paranoid, but I am aware of Naples' reputation, so would like to stay in a neighbourhood where I feel safe. From what I gather, I shouldn't stay around the train station, and maybe not even in the Centro Storico?

We will be visiting the Archeological Museum, and will be taking a day trip to Mt. Vesuvius. We will probably also go to Pompeii again.

      Thanks in advance!

I will travel by train from Sorrento on a Wednesday and fly out the next morning early (4:00 am check-in). I thought to stay at a hotel near the airport... I had reservations at the Charming Int'l Hotel, but just got notice that they went out of business. They suggested the Millenium Gold Hotel nearby. Anyone know about the airport hotels? If I check into a hotel after arriving, then try to go out to see the city and then get back to hotel, is that reasonable? I don't want to be out after dark. Is the airport far from town? Sorry to sound like a chicken...but I guess I am!
