Hello, We are plannig a holiday in Saint-Jean-de-Monts from 14th of July. Since we don't just want to sit on the beach we definately want to rent a car. However we are undecided where to pick it up. Since the rental cost is the same it makes sence to pick up at Paris airport and drive all the way. On the other hand TGV is faster to Nantes and don't need to do the driving. But for 2-2,5 hours the price tag seems to be high. Obviously if large traffic (jam) is already expected than it is another pro on the TGV side. When will the holidays start in France? Can we expect a normal flow of traffic on 14th of July from Paris to Nantes? Or is it likely that the drive will take more time than what Google/Michelin calculates with? Also what is the highway cost from Paris CDG to Nantes? (to compare apple to apple: TGV price vs. driving cost). Thanks in advance
the highway tolls are very expensive , no less the price of gas. if taken the local route, can be very slow and consider the traffic. With having to park the car in Paris and picking up the car in Nantes instead could be a winner. But then again, you have to lug the luggage, go to the train and do that again in Nantes besides picking up the rental. If there is a family traveling in a group, a car would be better in Paris...if solo with compantion, a train.where you just sit and relax. cheers tommy x

autoroutes.fr/en/key-rates.h... should give your tolls July 14th ? Bastille Day ? good or bad for traffic in Paris ? I'd guess bad, but I'm sure a more knowledgeable member will advise

Hi, First of all you don't say how many of you there will be, so comparing the train to a car is a bit difficult. Your big problem is that the 14th July this year will be a Saturday, and believe me, the roads around Paris will be hell!!!! The schools are off the week before but nowadays the w/end of the 14th is the real start. On the other hand once you do get on the A10, I believe it is only around 34€ for the motorway plus your petrol. In comparison, of course it depends on the time you fly into CDG, there is one train at 18h47 that'll get you to Nantes at 21h47 for 46€, otherwise it can vary between 64€ and over 90€. If you do decide to go for the train, try to book online beforehand, there are going to be a lot of people moving about that weekend.

great idea to consider the car, the best way to travel lol! road warrior here. I am 1h30 from Nantes and will be there again soon on my travels by the airport. Done the run several times, you will get tolls of 21€ taken the N12 from porte de Chatillon in the peripherique sud in Paris, direction Le Mans, you will change to the A11 to Nantes direction. about 5hrs drive. lesser time from Porte de Bercy along peripherique go out and come in on porte de Gentilly on the A10 that changes later to A11 for about 4 hrs,but also 35 euros in tolls. either way you can plan on about 40 Euros of gas/petrol one way. if you compare this to the TGV train is a lot cheaper if you are more than two persons. I know because i do it all the time with a family of five.... Train right now on normal weekend travel just check is 80 euros to where I am which should be about similar to nantes per person one way. Traffic on July 14 is heavy coming to major celebration towns like Paris but you will be going the opposite direction so traffic will e lighter for sure. In addition with the car you can stop, take your time ,see more, and eat better. Hope it helps your decision
