3 weeks in namibia and see almost everything - possible ?

by lianne25 Online Now Feb 5, 2007 at 11:44 AM

Hello there, Hope to get some help from you..we are planning to go to Namibia in March, and we will have a total of 3 weeks available. There seem to be many beautiful places to see in Namibia but the distances are quite something. We will have our own 4 x 4 and would like to see the fish river canyon, sossusvlei, skeleton coast, etosha and caprivi. Did anyone do that, is this possible or should we focus on either the North or the South ? Thanks for your help ! Lian

Hi Lian, Just go for it, If you don't see it all you will only kick yourself later. Distances are huge, but roads are excellent and you can travel at 120 kph comfortably. Remember that you cannot enter and exit the Skeleton coast reserve at the same gate. You have to drive through, in which ever direction you chose and there is no where to stay unless you have booked. In Caprivi make sure you stop at Ngepi camp. This is a must, even if just for a swim in the “croc hippo pool”, a caged pool in the Okavango River for people to swim in, the only one in Africa. Ngepi is ± 20km off the main Katima Malimo road heading for the Botswana border past Popa Falls. See my travelogue on Botswana

I totally disagree with above. We are planning our third trip to Namibia this year and we still wont have seen all the places you mention! I definitely believe you should do either north or south. Our firt trip was a three week self drive trip: Windhoek, Waterberg Plateau, Etosha, Mt Etjo, Swakopmund/Walvis Bay, Sossusvlei/Sesreim, Hardap Dam area, Windhoek. There is no way you can cover those distances and have long enough to do any of those places justice.

It really depends what you want to see - do you want to spend time getting to know one area or see the highlights? 3 weeks is ample time if it is the latter. In order to plan your trip I suggest looking at the overland company routes. These take in the highlights and are usually done in 2 - 2 1/2 weeks. Luderitz is not on most of the routes because it is out of the way, but you may find that you have the time and flexibility to go there too. Kim

Yeah it is definitely possible, but of course you will not have enough time to explore in depth! But still travelling in Namibia to see the highlights is a wonderful holiday. My advice is to not rush through Sussusvlei and Etosha .... spend at least 3-4 nights in Etosha and at least 3 nights in the Namib Naukluft area (including Sussusvlei) - there are some nice opportunities to hike in the Namib Naukluft. 3 weeks is also enough time to at least pass through and admire Damaraland and look for the desert elephants and track rhinos on foot! Enjoy!!

Hi I was born in Namibia and stayed there for 18 years. Have been there many times on tours ever since. It is almost impossible to do the whole of Namibia and see it all. But you should really try. If you are in the southern area, please ensure you go to Kolmanskop which is a ghost diamond town just outside of Luderitz on the coast. YOu have to spend some time in Swakopmund, it is a beautiful, German colonial town. If you are going up north, make sure you visit the Waterberg nature reserve as well as Etosha. A trip to the Skeleton coast will be a bonus. Then in the east there are many lodges that will provide a real san Bushman experience in the region of Gobabis. WOW, I hope I helped, let me know if you need more info.
